Grimm Up NorthOctober's Grimm Up North horror and sci-fi festival brought the best in genre cinema to the city of Manchester for a second year running and gave fans access to some exclusive movie screenings.

As part of the closing night celebrations, the winners of the festival's Golden Scythe Awards were unveiled, with some of the luck recipients in attendance to pick up their very own statuette. A panel of judges from the online blogging and podcasting community were charged with the task of coming up with the winning entries, having also spoken to festival goers and carefully monitored reactions to the films on the Grimm Up North social networking channels.

Horror Icon Ingrid Pitt Dies Aged 73

Ingrid Pitt, the enigmatic Queen of horror cinema has died, she was 73. A true icon, Ingrid starred in two of Hammer's most celebrated movies, Countess Dracula and The Vampire Lovers. She also appeared in the cult shocker The Wicker Man alongside Edward Woodward. Ingrid also had parts in Where Eagles Dare, The House That Dripped Blood and Who Dares Wins. More recently she appeared in Hammer's contemporary shocker, Beyond The Rave.

We interviewed Ingrid a few years back for this site and that piece will be reposted in tribute to her later in the week. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends.

UK fans of the infamous cult film, originally released under the name Day of the Woman in 1978 and later re-titled to I Spit on Your Grave, will be able to purchase the ultimate collector's edition on DVD and Blu-ray as of this week. However Irish fans of the cult video nasty will be prohibited from purchasing locally.

Freesat Awards Winner 2010The Horror Channel has scooped the prize for Best Themed Channel at this year's Freesat Awards, marking the very best in channels and services available on the free-to-air digital satellite TV service.

Ju-OnThe masterful Japanese horror Ju-On continues the series with the release of Ju-On: White Ghost and Ju-On: Black Ghost on DVD April 26th from 4Digital Media. The success of the original Ju-On (The Curse) in Japan spawned a western remake when in 2004 the film was released under the name of The Grudge, a literal frame by frame remake of the inspired original.

The soundtrack to Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell has just hit UK stores on the Silva Screen Label. Composed by Christopher Young, who worked with Raimi on his films The Gift and Spider-Man 3, it’s a work of gothic darkness that heralded Raimi’s long awaited return to the horror genre.

Sam Raimi stated that emphasis was on using the soundtrack to create a world that didn’t exist, a world of the "supernatural." Couldn't have put it better myself!
