Released at a time when horror cinema was awash with hack n' slash shockers, An American Werewolf In London was a refreshing change from all those faceless killers that were lurking around. For the first time in ages we had a creative and creepy creature feature, the most memorable since Jaws scared us out of the water during the mid 70s.
Written and directed with passion and wit by John Landis, the movie was, and still is, one of the finest pieces of werewolf horror and though it contained some of the funniest moments committed to celluloid; it also brought some very visceral and gruesome sequences. Oh, and the small matter of the finest transformation scene ever filmed.
Fans of bizarre, action packed thrills will need to put the date of February 7th into their diaries as Revolver Entertainment will release the festival favourite Alien Vs Ninja onto DVD.
Returning from a deadly mission, a band of legendary Iga Ninja warriors see a giant fireball blaze across the sky and crash into the distant forest. Rushing to investigate, they soon find themselves under attack from a pack of brutal and hungry aliens, and that none of their weapons, neither swords nor throwing stars, seem to have any effect on the savage predators.
Non-stop martial arts mayhem meets monster mash-up in this fantastic flick packed with fast and furious fights, great gore, hilarious action and incredible stunt work.

Eli Roth is one of the most talented people working in the movie industry today. He was behind the genre breaking movies Cabin Fever and Hostel, starred in Quentin Tarantnio’s Inglourious Basterds and produced the most talked about horror movie of 2010, The Last Exorcism. We had a quick chat with this very busy guy about his work on that move and what drew him to the project.
HC: Have you always been a horror movie fan and do you have a favourite movie from when you were growing up?
ER: Oh yeah, I saw The Exorcist when I was 6 and it changed my life and all I really wanted to do was make horror movies.
There have been plenty of possession movies over the last few decades, the most notable being The Exorcist which shocked audiences around the world in the early 1970s. Though time may have withered its impact, the subject matter is still incredibly strong. Not many films of this sub-genre have come close in capturing the raw horror that The Exorcist emitted. That is until now as director Daniel Stamm has delivered what could be the most entertaining but terrifying possession movie yet, The Last Exorcism.
After a career spent helping the devout through prayer and trickery, Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) invites a film crew to document his final fraudulent days as an exorcist. Soon his faith is truly tested wh

Last year we reported that UK horror writer Garry Charles was giving away his novel, Death Tide as free a download. It seems the generous offer worked as it has been picked up by US indie press Skullvines Press for a print release alongside another tale of terror entitled Tranquillity.
But do not fear as Charles has replaced Death Tide with a new title designed to scare you senseless. Slavis tells the tale of a demon resurrection upon the site of an archaeological dig and a Police Officer's quest to find the people behind the death of his estranged family. As usual expect plenty of the red stuff dripping from the pages and the action level to equal that of the gore as Charles proves yet again why he is quickly becoming the UK's Horror Supremo.
It's nearly October, the time of pumpkins, ghosts and Dario Argento! Yes folks, the Horror Channel is celebrating this Halloween in blood-splattered style with a season of Dario Argento's finest work. All start at 22:55 but do keep checking the online guide for any last minute changes.
October 1st - The Bird With The Crystal Plumage
Harking back to 1970 this was Argento's directorial debut and signalled exactly where his work would take him. In this chilling murder mystery a writer is stalked by a ruthless serial killer when he witnesses an attempt on a woman's life. A box-office hit in Italy this is a classically styled Giallo with sharp performances from Tony Mustante and Suzy Kendall.

Now, 400 years later, an adventurous archeology professor and his students are exploring Mexico’s Baja Peninsula and unwittingly wake a long dormant curse. Confronted by Coronado's long lost army - now a militia of skeleton warriors - the group find themselves in a life or death battle. But, how do you kill an army that is already dead?

This month he’s introducing three movies as part of Horror Channel’s Directors Night strand. We caught up with this very busy guy to talk about his perfect documentary and his plans for the future.
HC: Were you surprised by the incredibly positive reaction from the crowd when your documentary played at FrightFest?
PD: Absolutely. It being my first film I really had no comprehension as to what to expect. I knew we at the right place for it to be unveiled and thankfully everyone seemed to really dig it and more importantly got that we were genuine in our intentions to mak

Let Me In, Hammer Films' interpretation of the bestsselling Swedish novel Lat den Ratte Komma (Let The Right One In) by John Ajvide Lindqvist, and the highly-acclaimed film of the same name, will arrive at UK screens November 5th. Buried, the critically acclaimed new shocker from Lions Gate comes to UK cinemas on September 29th. The final full-length trailer is below but first, here's what it's all about:
Paul Conroy is not ready to die. But when he wakes up 6 feet underground with no idea of who put him there or why, life for the truck driver and family man instantly becomes a hellish struggle for survival. Buried with only a cell phone and a lighter, his contact with the outside world and ability to piece together clues that could help him discover his location are maddeningly limited. Poor reception, a rapidly draining battery and a dwindling oxygen supply become his worst enemies in a tightly confined race against time - fighting panic, despair and delirium, Paul has only 90 minutes to be rescued.
Simon Rumley came to prominence in 2006 when his sinister chiller The Living And The Dead played at FrightFest. Raw and truly original it captivated the audience with its sombre tone and top drawer cast. He returned to FrightFest this year with his latest movie, another hard-hitting dramatic piece called Red, White & Blue so we decided to chat to him about his work and where the idea for the movie came from.
HC: You were last at FrightFest with your film The Living And The Dead, do you think you've changed as a director since then?

It kicked of in great style, the World Premiere of Adam Green's Hatchet II, a wild and energetic sequel to one of the most perfectly formed slasher movies made. Green is an intelligent director who uses his inner horror fanboy out every now and again to deliver some deliciously over-the-top set pieces. Howard and Jon Ford brought their movie The Dead to FrightFest 2010 and it played to a very appreciative crowd. Its an intelligent and apocalyptic zombie movie, taking this well plundered genre to new heights. Horror Channel had the chance to speak to these rising stars about their movie and what inspired them to make it.
HC: Did you and your brother always want to work in the film industry?
Jon: Interesting question. The very term film industry implies a sausages factory mentality which I think is the problem with most movies. The Dead has been made from the heart rather than the pocket, a very rare thing these days. So in answe

Emily Booth brings you the finest pieces from FrightFest Day 5 including chats with The Dead directors Jon Ford and Howard J Ford and stars of the movie Prince David Osei and Rob Freeman plus director Daniel Stamm, producer Eli Roth and actress Ashley Bell from the movie The Last Exorcism.

Horror Channel's very own Emily Booth delivers another video report from FrightFest 2010. Here she chats to Andy Nyman, the cast of The Loved Ones and director of A Serbian Film, Srdjan Spasojevic.
Bedevilled continued the festival's theme of strong women characters with a convincing performance from Seo Young-hee playing a girl who has suffered at the hands of the locals of the island. A bit slow to start off with the film eventually entered a strong and emotional final 45-minutes that mixed the traditional revenge movie "pay offs" with an anger and pain that wasn't exploited too much.
Director Jang Cheol-soo uses the stunning location to emphasise the plight and the claustrophobia the main character is experiencing and helps ground it in a brutal reality. A movie I didn't expect to enjoy but really pleased I caught it.

Just sat through a preview of a new horror series coming from 20th Century Fox, The Walking Dead. Based on the comic book of the same name it's being brought to life (if you pardon the pun) by acclaimed director Frank Darabont it looks very raw and real and doesn’t seem as if it will shirk from showing the red stuff. It comes to the UK this November.
South Korea is our next destination and Jang Cheol-soo’s Bedevilled. It concerns two different women whose lives merge into a bloody tale of friendship and revenge. Not heard much about this yet so going to see if its as god as people say it is.

Jake West is one the most talked about directors in the UK today. His movies Doghouse and Evil Aliens are fan favourites and this man of many talents also finds time to run a DVD label named Nucleous. At FrightFest 2010 Jake brought with him his documentary, Video Nasties: Moral Panic and Censorship which charts the era in the UK that saw the birth of the video nasty. We chatted to Jake about this and his memories of the time.
HC: Can you recall the first "video nasty" that you saw?
JW: Yes the first nasty I saw was The Evil Dead. It was a big deal as a teenager because everybody was talking about how amazing it was.
Day 5 of FrightFest promises to be a day of anticipation and reflection.. We have an in-depth documentary, the undead in Africa, South Korean shocks, three lives bound by blood and satanic possession.
First up is the World premiere of Jake West’s documentary Video Nasties: Moral Panic and Censorship. This covers one of the most talked periods of home video history, namely that of the censorship measures drafted in to classify home video viewing. This will then be included on the 3 Disc DVD set Video Nasties – The Definitive Guide which is released on Oct 11th from Nucleus films. Following the doc there will be a celebrity panel discussion about this subject.
Well the announcement from Adam Green and Joe Lynch was that they are working on an anthology movie called Chillarama with directors Tim Sullivan and Adam Rifkin. Set in the classic style American movie drive-in it sounds like and amazing piece. Adam's segment, The Diary Of Anne Frankenstein was due to be shown but due to technical fault it didn't. Luckily it played after the "surprise movie" and was an amazing experience. Think of 1940s Universal monster mash meets biting satire and you get the message.

There's been a lot of strong female characters at FrightFest 2010 none more so than the mother in Jorge Michel Grau's We Are What We Are(Somos lo que hay). A fight for control ensues as to who should now find their food. The two brothers and sister try to obey their mother but the boys battle to prove themselves.

Andy Nyman is one of the nicest and talented guys in show business. He can act, direct, write, perform stunning magic tricks, in fact he has so many strings to his bow its takes two people to lift it!
Anyway...
Andy was here with his Quiz From Hell and it was a smart, funny and brain scratching segment that caused many discussions in the cinema foyer. Seriously did anyone get them all correct?
This was followed by a compendium of short movies which are being shown to highlight some of the freshest talent out there at the moment. These were hand picked by Paul McEvoy from hundreds so they really are the cream of the crop.
French horror The Pack (La Meutte) was a movie that reminded me of many films such as Zombi, Night Of The Living Dead and the TV series The League Of Gentlemen! Not a bad mix I grant you and this not so overly gory tale of monsters from the earth claiming back a different kind of nutrition played very well. The cast which included a smashing and considered performance from Yolande Moreau work well from a script that starts off being littered with dark humour and then is swallowed in just darkness.
The ending was bleak but satisfying and just right though I do have a few questions I’d like to ask director Franck Richard. Effects were also crowd pleasing with a rather nice take on how a creature can open a door when

The thing with movie festivals is that you lose track of time. It came a bit of a shock to learn that it's Sunday! But if it's Sunday it means its Day 4 of FrightFest 2010.
Today's programme promises plenty of surprises including Mother Nature's revenge, a quiz from hell, a short movie showcase, a cannibal family, blood-soaked fury and some Ozploitation.
There's also another surprise, as A Serbian Movie was removed from the festival the guys have lined up a replacement for us to enjoy. But what can it be? We'll bring the news as soon as we know.
Horror Channel's Diva of the Darkside Emily Booth takes us through the juciest moments from FrightFest day 2. (Picture of Emily www.beckphotographic.com)
I Spit On Your Graveplayed to a packed Empire cinema earlier this evening. This screening, the European premiere was sponsored by the Horror Channel, and is an unflinching look at one woman's revenge against a gang of men who physically and mentally assault her in the most brutal and harrowing way. Escaping the scene we follow Jennifer's swift and inventive revenge on the men, taking the audience along with her on a bloody and violent journey. This remake takes the initial idea and runs with it cranking the violence up a notch and is not for the faint hearted.
In total contrast Monsters (pictured) is now playing, a road movie that is set around an alien infestation. More on this a tad later.
One of the best things about FrightFest is the abundance of surprises the guys have lined up for fans. We've just had a double whammy that really grabbed the crowd.
First up The Human Centipede [First Sequence] director Tom Six hit the stage and gave us a sneaky look behind the scenes of his much anticipated sequel The Human Centipede II [Full Sequence]. A gang of young adults find themselves at the mercy of a strange beast in 13 HRS, the new movie from Jonathan Glendening. The man himself is on stage as I type doing a quick Q+A with a couple of members of the cast. The film itself is a traditional "monster on the lose" sort of a thing but with some nice contemporary twists and some sibling friction. The cast bond well and the creature itself looks pretty cool even though this isn't the biggest budgeted movie around. What it has is strong special effects done in the old school way. There's some great moments of tension, a good chunk of the movie is played in the cramped space of a loft where the characters battle not only the evil down below but each others inner demons, and working out just who is next for the chop is good fun!
A few years back Paul Andrew Williams came to FrightFest with a reel from his soon to be released horror/comedy The Cottage. Well here we are in 2010 and Paul has come complete with his new movie, an urban horror named Cherry Tree Lane.
Claustrophobic and vocally brutal the film highlights urban terror at its most extreme for a gang invade a suburban home all in the name of vengeance. Strong themes are explored with some of the worst events happening off screen adding much to the darkness of the movie. By using just a few sets and a small but talented ensemble, Williams has created a film that doesn't flinch from searching social issues.
We stick with the revenge theme with the next movie, the UK premiere of Robert Lieberman's »

It's Saturday and the sun is beating down on Leicester Square. Not that we care what the weather is doing as we're heading into the Empire cinema for Day 3 of FrightFest 2010.
Another mixed programme of movies is waiting for us including a Brit horror, vigilante parents, a world premiere, a new interpretation of a notorious shocker, a monster invasion and Hong Kong horror.
As usual there will be surprises on the way for attendees and for those possessing full weekend passes, today's the day they get their legendary goodie bags!
Over in the Discovery Screen there's another eclectix mix of movies including Christopher Roth, Fanboys, After.Life, Finale and Burning Bright.
The real attraction of FrightFest (personally speaking) is the mixture of horror genres that the event presents. Take tonight for example, we had a violent tale of bloody revenge and an outrageous sci-fi shocker packed with over-the-top splatter and gore. Both appealed but in totally different ways.
In Red Hill a young cop named Shane has to stop an escaped convict from slaughtering the population of the small town he has just moved to. Tense, violent and played totally straight the film allowed the audience to attach themselves to the players and be swept along with the speedy direction of Patrick Hughes. Though the ending may have come as no surprise it did impress with some memorable imagery and a traditional Western style sound

Tobe Hooper didn't disappoint with his appearance at FrightFest and created what surely must be one of the longest queues ever for a director's autograph. There was a river of fans that snaked around the Empire foyer and back into the main screen. Posters from all over the world were clutched in hands and one person even had a sledgehammer for him to sign!
Its become a bit of a tradition that directors Adam Green and Joe Lynch create a season of shorts for us all to enjoy entitled The Road To FrightFest. Well this year is no different and the guys are using The Blair Witch Project as their inspiration. Hilarious and rude these small segments are always eagerly anticipated by FrightFest attendees. You guys are legends! Come on everyone, "Let the Midnight Special…"
Well, what can I say? Eggshells was as trippy and spaced out as you'd want from a movie that dates back to 1969. This Tobe Hooper debut indicted the direction his work would take, highlighting some trademark camera angles and shots that would be seen in his later work. From the searing heat to the dark humour this was not only a fantasy but a slice of social commentary made at a time when America was starting to look in on itself.
In contrast, the pure horror of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre can still unnerve and unsettle the viewer. On the big screen the uneasy atmosphere is amplified and the movie looked stunning. Though I've seen it many times I'd never viewed it in a cinema and it still ranks as one the finest horror movies made. Tobe

This Halloween the most successful horror franchise in the world unleashes a new entry into its box-office dominating run of movies, Saw 3D.
In Saw 3D, the seventh chapter in this blood-splattered but inventive series, a deadly battle rages over Jigsaw's brutal legacy. A group of Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) survivors gathers to seek the support of self-help guru, and fellow survivor, Bobby Dagen (Horror Channel favourite Sean Patrick Flanery). Soon though, the survivors really must help themselves as Dagen’s dark secrets unleash a new wave of terror...
We've been lucky enough to catch the first 8 minutes of this and can report that the 3D photography looks amazing and that this could be the strongest Saw yet.
The premise seems straight forward enough: tough, potty-mouthed London gangsters do a deal with a bunch of Slavic businessmen and lose their nightclub, The Inferno. OK, so far so normal but add to that the aforementioned Slavic businessmen are vampires led by a guy named Dante Livienko and you have Steve Lawson's very original blood-sucking shocker Dead Cert. Filmed in a style reminiscent of late Hammer Dracula movies such as Dracula: AD 1972 and The Satanic Rites Of Dracula, this is a witty and bloody updating of the vampire genre.
Craig Fairbrass leads a cast that reads like a who's who of Southern acting talent including Danny Dyer, Billy Murray and Dexter Fletcher. Standing in the Van Helsing kind-of-a-role is stage legend Steven Berkoff.

FrightFest 2010 has officially begun with what surely must be one of the most anticipated sequels in years, Adam Green's Hatchet II. Following directly on from the first installment its a solid mixture of shocks, slaughtering and big laughs. Yes, you read that correctly, Hatchet IIhas a wicked sense of humour running all the way through it. But back to the horror and from the pulse pounding start to the blood-splattered ending, the film grabs the audience by the neck and refuses to let go. The set-ups are imaginative using traditional effects rather then relying on CGI which makes it feel like old school horror but with the added bonus of a decent sized budget.
Well, the Horror Channel crew have set up camp and are readying themselves for five days of blogging and reporting from FrightFest 2010, filled with excitement as to which movies will provide the stand-out moments of the year.

Here the ever friendly Scotsman chats about his encounter with The Exorcist, his favourite FrightFest moment and the plans he has for the future.
HC: Can you recall when your interest in horror/cult cinema begin?
