Sorry about that tabloid style heading but wanted to grab your attention as I’ve just watched one of the most amazing vampire movies ever! Let the Right One In tells the story of young Oskar, a school boy who suffers at the hands of bullies on a daily basis. One day Eli moves next door and his whole existence takes on a new meaning. Eli is a vampire who needs fresh blood and her guardian is becoming too old to fetch her blood to drink.
And that’s all you need to know. Adapted by John Ajvide Linquist from his own book, this is a haunting movie, gritty but beautifully shot. Each frame of the film is packed with either beautiful snowy landscapes or the dark world Eli has to reside in. The young cast give very naturalist performances, and director Tomas Alfredson keeps the tone unsettling, even during some of the more uplifting moments the film has a dark edge that stabs your memory like a stake through the heart. Truly brilliant and probably one of the best movies of the festival so far.
