Frightfest 2009: The Ultimate Round Up

Well, it's been a very busy 5 days but FrightFest 2009 was without a shadow of a doubt the best yet. To tell you the truth I feared that the new location, The Empire in Leicester Square, would be too large and that this celebration would lose its friendly atmosphere. But these fears were soon laid to rest when the first movie, the world premiere of Christopher Smith’s Triangle. This intelligent and pretty bizarre tale set the tone for the festival as it one of the most unpredictable.

The variation in movies was extensive; we had giant bug invasions in Infestation, hack ‘n slash action in The Hills Run Red,, brutal revenge in The Horseman and Dracula Girl Vs Frankenstein Girl which can only be described as a total gore-fest! There were some wonderful discoveries too, The Human Centipede was far better than I expected being a strange study of one mad doctor’s obsession with connecting three people via their gastric tracts had real depth to it. People expecting it to just being a nasty piece of exploitation were probably disappointed whilst others may have been relieved.

A movie I didn’t have much hope for was Adam Gierasch’s remake The Night Of The Demons. Bloody, gory and funny it paid a respectful nod to the original whilst adding some nice pieces of dark humour without drowning in CGI overload.

It was a musical FrightFest too, Smash Cut actor a cult star David Hess played an interesting acoustic set whilst Heartless star Jim Sturgess played a blistering short set. Also singer/songwriter and now movie director Federico Zampaglione charmed the crowd with his wonderful charm and wit as well as freaking us out with his sinister piece of cinema, Shadow.

Personally speaking the major highlights were watching the stunning documentary Beware The Moon: Remembering An American Werewolf In London from the charming Paul Davis and viewing a remastered version of An American Werewolf In London on the big screen straight after. To top this off John Landis was on hand nearly all weekend to meet a greet fans. Add to this the joy of having FrightFest favourites Adam Green and Joe Lynch’s short movies entitled American Douche Brothers In London which were a series of skits based on the famous movie that had the audience in stitches. Well done lads and hurry back!

And that my friends is that. All that remains for me to do is thank Alan, Paul, Ian and Greg for giving us access to every guest that attended and for going out of their way to help us. Without their assistance this Blog and Emily’s Video Diaries would have been incredibly short and a tad on the dull side! To the staff at The Empire Cinema we heartily thank you for your wonderful hospitality and really looked after us whilst we dashed around their beautiful cinema. To all the FrightFesters who stopped to chat to us on camera we would like to express mammoth gratitude for your opinions good or bad really made our pieces far more interesting. So on behalf of the Zone Horror crew; Emily, Marta, Matthew, Ivo, Rich, Ed, James, Zoe, Kara, Gill and Barry we say a final farewell to FrightFest 2009 and hopefully see you all next year at The Empire, Leicester Square for FrightFest 2010.
