Grabbers is one of those movies that seizes your attention and doesn't leave go for its duration. A simple idea is transformed into a satisfying and clever movie that has already become a highlight of FrightFest 2012 for me.
Here's what the FrightFest brochure says about it: The day after a meteor lands in the ocean and a group of fisherman going missing, Garda Lisa Nolan arrives for a temporary assignment in the Irish village of Erin Island. With Garda Ciarán O'Shea she starts investigating strange occurrences happening around the remote fishing community, especially the odd looking creatures turning up in lobster traps and washing ashore. Pretty soon it becomes clear their quiet enclave is under attack by an alien invasion and all the space monsters need to survive are blood and water. Then it's accidentally discovered that a high blood alcohol level will kill the nasty intergalactic creatures. Realizing their only weapon is booze, the entire village gathers in the pub to get smashed and prepare for battle.
With a cast that includes Richard Coyle, Ruth Bradley, Russell Tovey, Lalor Roddy and David Pearse all playing their socks off to a cracking script from Kevin Lehane coupled with solid direction from Jon Wright and superb effects this creature feature had me hooked from the start. Pure genius.
Add to the this the stark horror of The Seasoning House and the blood-splattered crowd pleaser Cockneys Vs Zombies and you have one of the best ever first days of FrightFest ever.
