Spain has once again triumphed at FrightFest. After the class act that was [REC]3 Genesis comes another beauty this time from the other original [REC] director, Jaume Balaguero.
Sleep Tight is a beautiful piece which is psychological horror at its finest. Balaguero, when he introduced the movie, insisted it wasn't exactly a horror flick. Sorry mate but it is and one of the most pure horror films I've seen in a long time and also one of the most accomplished.
Unassuming Cesar is janitor at an upscale apartment block in Barcelona. However, his quiet politeness hides a much more sinister personality. His current obsession is Clara, the new cheerful tenant on the fifth floor. At night when Clara is fast asleep, Cesar sneaks into her flat - and bed - to appease his twisted fantasies. If only the pesky young girl down the corridor would mind her own business, and one senior citizen wouldn't poke her nose in. But soon Cesar's life is going to spiral out of all control due to a police investigation that threatens to ruin his whole miserable master plan
With a tight and stunning script and a cast that shine throughout this is a masterly dissection of one man's obsession and almost self destruction.
So far Sleep Tight is my favourite movie to have graced Screen 1.
