LATEST | FEATURES | INTERVIEWS | NEWS | FRIGHTFEST | REVIEWS A horror/comedy with a serious message, Kate Herron's Smear.
By James Whittington, Thursday 8th March 2018
Described as "One of the best horror shorts to come out of this year's Frightfest" (LoveHorror) and featured as 'One of the Best Shorts at the 61st London Film Festival' ("Gets more and more sensational with every watch... Pure Genius") by Flickering Myth. Smear is a lube-tastic horror-comedy inspired by Gremlins, Tremors and Little Shop of Horrors, about a woman going in for her first pap-smear test starring in the lead, Sophia Di Martino of the BAFTA-nominated Flowers and Nick Mohammed.
It also stars Isabella Laughland (Harry Potter), comedians Ben Target (Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year), Mariam Haque, Briony Redman and Katherine Bennett Fox of The Free Association.
Made by filmmaker Kate Herron (Screen International Star, BBC Hot New Talent List, Forbes 30 under 30), with her writing partner Briony Redman, together they are currently developing an original comedy series with comedian Tom Davis' (Murder in Successville) production company Shiny Button.
Smear is produced by Douglas Cox of Shadowhouse Films (Sundance short film Dawn of the Deaf). It includes a score by Emmy-nominated composer Patrick Jonsson (Virunga, The White Helmets), was shot by Nicola Daley ACS (8th woman in Australian history to be accredited into Australian Society of Cinematographers) and practical effects by BIFA-nominated SFX artist Dan Martin of 13FingerFX (High Rise, Free Fire). Fun fact the inside of the tentacle is the face hugger from alien, modelled on Giger's wife - that is one famous vagina!
But there is a serious message as to why this was made. Kate made the film to explore pap-smear anxiety, "My friend told me my first pap-smear would be the worst thing that ever happened to me... it wasn't" Cervical cancer screening has the lowest attendance numbers for women under 35 but is the most common cancer for women in that age-bracket. Nine women die everyday and two will be diagnosed every day with cervical cancer. Kate hopes the film will encourage more women to go, "Tentacles felt the most natural way to do this".
Festival screenings include: BFI London Film Festival, Upsalla, Flickerfest, Aesthetica, Citizen Jane, Raindance, Fake Flesh Fest, Lund Fantastic, Underwire, Morbido, London Short Film Festival and Encounters. It premiered at Frightfest.

"Coulrophobia: the fear of clowns."
There's been a spate of "killer clown" movies of late as well as that trend of people posting increasingly boring videos of themselves dressing up as clowns and scaring the crap out of people. After we've been treated to the Eli Roth produced Clown and the remake of IT, step forward a movie that truly does make clowns scary, Terrifier.
This is the story of the maniacal Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton), who terrorizes three young women on Halloween, butchering everyone who stands in his way. In grand Halloween tradition, we see the night he came home in all its gory glory, in a pl...SHARE: READ MORE Friendly Beast - FrightFest review

Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow was a true showcase for world cinema. One of the stand out pieces came from Gabriela Amaral Almeida who wrote and directed Friendly Beast, a film so visceral yet beautiful at the same time, it left an indelible mark on this reviewer's mind.
It's nearly closing time at a struggling restaurant. Staff want to go home while the boss struggles with money troubles and a desire for more power in his life. Enter two robbers, the catalyst for a violent situation, which the boss is initially able to contain and gain the upper hand. Suddenly, the already dangerous and explosive situation turns deadly; sides are taken, and people turn to the most abhorrent behaviour in an instant.

Recently I've been lucky enough to review some rather tasty Blu-rays from 88 Films. This company has been behind amazing releases of titles such as A Cat in the Brain, Anthropophagous and Don't Go in the Woods...Alone. So I decided to chat to managing director Richard Elliot about 88 Films and how they survive in a cut-throat market.
HC: How did 88 Films start?
RE: 88 Films started after James and I met working for another label and it was the usual "we think we can do it better than the boss" scenario. So we slowly developed an idea of what we wanted to do after work down the pub and after lots of head scratching and pork scratchings and some setbacks BE Movies was born... which quickly became 88 Films...SHARE: READ MORE Dario Argento's Tenebrae gets definitive vinyl release

Waxwork Records is thrilled to present the complete soundtrack vinyl release of Dario Argento's Tenebrae. Scored by three former members of Goblin in 1982 (Claudio Simonetti, Fabio Pignatelli, and Massimo Morante), the synth driven score makes it's definitive and expanded vinyl debut. Waxwork is excited to offer the most comprehensive version of the soundtrack album on vinyl to one of the most important Giallo films ever made.
Unlike the soundtracks that Goblin had previously contributed to the films by Dario Argento, the music of Tenebrae incorporates heavy electronica and dance music blended with rock and disco elements for a unique hybrid of genre and composition style.
