Attack of the Adult Babies
Dom Brunt's bizarre and genre breaking Attack of the Adult Babies delivered one of the most inventive and gross-out pieces at Horror Channel FrightFest 2017. No one could have guessed what this movie was going to be about and let's just say it split the audience right down the middle. It's a stomach punch of satire, horror and surreal comedy that takes time to sink in so this Blu-ray edition is the perfect opportunity to watch the film several times, so you can "get" what the message is and that all the weird stuff going on means something in the end!
When two teenagers are forced to break into a manor to steal documents, they discover high-powered, middle-aged men taking refuge from the stresses of daily life by dressing in nappies and indulging their every perverse nursery whim! Then it gets really weird!
As you can tell, not your usual movie plot and at first this shocker seems like Benny Hill on acid with plenty of leggy nurses dressed in seductive uniforms with added scenes of guts and faeces splattered across the walls, but if you scrape that aside you'll see the movie has a satirical dark heart and reveals itself to be a dissection of how the world treats its less fortunate.
With a cast that includes Joanne Mitchell (who also came up with this bizarre story) Kurtis Lowe, Kate Coogan, Andrew Dunn and Sally Dexter, the film leaps from surreal social comment to outright splatstick (or shi*tstick) and back again as it runs through its duration time without ever letting up on the bizarreness.
Sally Dexter smoulders off the screen as the strict lead "Nurse" Margaret, a lady who runs her care home with a rod of iron yet manages to keep the movie grounded. You truly believe she's running this care home and you can tell she's relishing every word of dialogue. Shaune Harrison's prosthetic designs allow the cast to act through their bizarre make-up without the viewer being distracted by it. The other effects are truly stomach churning, with guts and other bits splashed to the four winds and a marvelous axe-wielding scene,
The score from Thomas Ragsdale underlines the mood of the movie perfectly and proves he can add atmosphere without killing the drama. I should also note the cracking piece After Midnight from Mad Jack and the Hatters which accompanies the end credits.
If you're after a movie that's almost beyond description, then Attack of the Adult Babies is for you. It is destined to become a midnight movie cult favourite, ably demonstrating how Dominic and Joanne are two of the most creative people out there at the moment.
Oh, did I mention the claymation sequence near the end?!

The Conjuring movies and their Annabelle spin-offs have already delivered some cool moments of paranormal terror but none seem to be as anticipated as the latest from this chilling universe, The Nun.
