LATEST | FEATURES | INTERVIEWS | NEWS | FRIGHTFEST | REVIEWS Booth's Blog: Big Ass Spiders and James Wan this weekend on Horror!
By Emily Booth, Tuesday 12th September 2017
Sometimes a good title is all you need to know exactly what you're in for; Nude Nuns with Big Guns, Lesbian Vampire Killers and now Big Ass Spider! Doing exactly what is says on the tin, our network premiere on Friday rides the current Mega Shark wave of 'bigger is better', but before you roll your eyes at this one (as I did) this is one seriously fun romp from start to finish with a fast pace, great script and brilliant comedic actors. You know you're in for a good ride from the outset as the film starts at the peak of the action, the camera pulls out revealing "Heroes" actor Greg Grunberg (who played lovable cop Matt Parkman) caught in the midst of chaos and carnage filmed in slow motion while a cover song of The Pixies' stunning 'Where is my Mind' plays out creating one insanely cool opening montage! If it weren't so over the top you'd be fooled into thinking you were watching a serious wartime epic. This film is very in on the joke, and enjoys playing with the art of the ridiculous.
The action then rewinds 12 hours to when Greg Grunberg, who plays a lovable pest exterminator, goes from zero to hero when his local hospital becomes the site of a dangerous contagion; a mutant spider that's about to hatch from the insides of a dead body! These scenes where the spider slowly stalks the corridors and air vents looking for victims are fraught with suspense and play out like a serious horror movie, before the fun and irony kick back in with the likes of Ray Wise turning up as Major Braxton C. Tanner, head of a special military task force, and tasked with hushing up one big military mistake! The spider grows at an exponential rate and goes on the rampage in downtown LA with a climactic big nod to King Kong. Can our pest exterminator use his bug detecting skills to bring down the massive creature?!
So that's Friday night sorted, then Saturday sees Horror auteur James Wan (director of Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring films) delve into the world of ventriloquism and creepy dolls in the network premiere of Dead Silence. An eccentric ventriloquist is blamed for the disappearance of a young boy and murdered by angry parents. For her funeral she requests that she be buried with her dolls, or her 'children' as she prefers to call them! This creepy legend has left the town of Raven's Fair forever haunted by her memory. A young man returns to his gothic hometown to unravel the true mystery of what happened when he is accused of his wife's murder. Expect a lot of vacant murderous dolls and a lot of jump scares in this creepy horror from a man who knows exactly how to twist the knife!
Stunning premieres this weekend with Big Ass Spider! Friday 15th at 9:00pm and Dead Silence Saturday 16th at 9:00pm.

The stunning artwork for this year's annual Bank Holiday event, the UK's largest celebration of genre cinema, taking place at Cineworld Leicester Square and The Prince Charles Cinema between Thursday August 23rd and Monday August 27th.
For Graham, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' seemed too important to ignore: "In the same way that Frankenstein gave life to his monster, horror films stimulate our imagination and give form to ideas that otherwise dare not leave the shadows", he commented. Attack of the Adult Babies
Dom Brunt's bizarre and genre breaking Attack of the Adult Babies delivered one of the most inventive and gross-out pieces at Horror Channel FrightFest 2017. No one could have guessed what this movie was going to be about and let's just say it split the audience right down the middle. It's a stomach punch of satire, horror and surreal comedy that takes time to sink in so this Blu-ray edition is the perfect opportunity to watch the film several times, so you can "get" what the message is and that all the weird stuff going on means something in the end!
