Five movies not to miss at Grimmfest 2018
By James Whittington, Monday 1st October 2018
Grimmfest 2018

Grimmfest is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and the vent itself kicks off this Thursday at ODEON Manchester Great Northern. The programme is filled with some of the finest films from around the glob but here's our top 5 must see shockers.

Girls With Balls
All girl volleyball team The Falcons end up stranded in the middle of nowhere after their mini-van breaks down. Little do they know they have landed in degenerate hunters' territory and the hunt is on. But the girls are more resourceful than it appears. In the heart of the forest, the tables are about to turn between hunter and hunted... Brutal, bombastic and bloody funny, Girls With Balls is exactly the kind of movie you need at a film festival. It's a smart take on the "strangers in peril" plot with a fresh feminine twist that makes it even more enjoyable.

Framed
Alex has arranged a house party for his friends. Little does he know that they have all been selected to star in the latest episode of a shocking new web series... If you like your horror snappy, funny, raw, extreme and of its time then Framed is for you. It's a shocking, twisted piece from Spain that reflects society's obsession with voyeurism and extreme content. With a short running time director and co-writer Marc Martinez Jordan delivers an adrenaline packed piece of home invasion brutality which blows away anything you've seen on this topic before.

Alive
A severely injured man and woman awake in an abandoned sanatorium only to discover that a sadistic caretaker holds the keys to their freedom and the horrific answers as to their real identity. We're big fans of the Grimmfest regular Rob Grant and Alive which is his latest feature prove his skill as a director. Tense, genre-mixing and tight, the film is an uneasy, psychological experience with top-notch performances from the three main cast.

Lifechanger
A murderous shape-shifter sets out on a blood-soaked mission to make things right with the woman he loves in this superior chiller from Justin McConnell. Atmospheric and played straight, this is what can be done with the genre without resorting to cliches. Lifechanger is a tremendously tight piece that allows the story to organically unfold until the heart-breaking final reel. Quite superb.

Anna and the Apocalypse
Destined to become a seasonal favourite with many, Anna and the Apocalypse is going to be a big cult hit, much in the same way the Rocky Horror Picture Show did, but with better songs! A zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven - at Christmas - forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones. With a great cast and even greater songs (poor English I know!) this is the only way to end a film festival and will have the streets of Manchester putting their decorations up early as well as stocking up on food, just in case!
