Get infected this April on Horror
By James W, Tuesday 20th March 2018

April on Horror Channel sees an Infection Season spread across Saturday nights with a highly contagious collection of outbreak action, headed by the network premieres of Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later and the equally impressive sequel 28 Weeks Later, starring Robert Carlyle. There are also welcome re-showings for Breck Eisner's critically-acclaimed remake of George Romero's 1973 movie, The Crazies, and M. Night Shyamalan's boldly unsettling survival movie The Happening.

28 Days Later on the 7th was one of the most successful genre movies of 2002 and helped Danny Boyle become one of the most consistent film makers around. A group of misguided animal rights activists breaks into a medical research lab and release virus-infected chimps. When London bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) awakes from a coma a month after, he finds the city deserted, save for zombie-like victims of the "Rage". Jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including Selena (Naomie Harris) and cab driver Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and together they embark on a perilous journey...

Set six months after the original, 28 Weeks Later (showing on the 14th) and the "Rage" virus annihilated the British Isles. The U.S. Army declares that the war against infection has been won, and that reconstruction of the country can begin. As the first wave of refugees returns, Don Harris (Robert Carlyle) and his wife Alice (Catherine McCormack) are reunited with their children but the virus is not yet dead, and this time it is more dangerous than ever. There is a rumour 28 Months Later may come about, until beware of the "Rage".

George A. Romero left behind him a legacy of invention and imagination so it wasn't any surprise Hollywood would look to his work for inspiration. The Crazies from 1973 is showing on the 21st and was one of his best and the remake from 2010 shows what Hollywood can do when they respect the original source. Sheriff David Dutten (Timothy Olyphant) and his pregnant wife, Judy (Radha Mitchell), find themselves trapped in a once-idyllic town they can no longer recognise. On the run from infected neighbours, loved ones and friends, targeted by the ruthless military and terrified of getting sick, they are forced to band together with other survivors in a desperate struggle for survival.

We end the season on the 28th with one of the most talked about movies in a long time, M. Night Shyamalan's first R-rated film, The Happening. The movie centres on an apocalyptic threat to humanity, which arrives with a series of violent, inexplicable deaths spreading across the country. The cause of the terrifying phenomenon remains unknown, prompting science teacher Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg), his wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel) and his colleague Julian (John Leguizamo) to try to elude the invisible killer in Pennsylvania's farmland. Soon it becomes clear that no one is safe.

Interview with Tim Van Dammen director of Mega Time Squad

Tim Van Dammen director of Mega Time Squad

You played a Street Demon in director Jason Lei Howden's FrightFest favourite Deathgasm. Is the New Zealand film community that small?

I didn't play a street demon; I am a street demon. The film community in NZ is small enough for most active people to know most other active people - but the genre scene is small enough for us all to know each other by at least one degree of separation. Many of my friends worked on or acted in Deathgasm and they needed a night shoot of 'street demons' so I donned my tie-dye and offered to help out. It was a lot of fun and I think Jason and the team did an incredible job.

Have you me...

Doctor Who The Five Doctors CD

The bracing, spine-chilling and atmospheric music soundtrack for Doctor Who: The Five Doctors was composed by Peter Howell at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The special effects were created by Dick Mills. The Five Doctors album features both the original score and the BBC Video special edition version which was, in 1995, produced, reworked and extended by Peter Howell. The BBC video featured updated visual effects and to match that the score was mixed in Dolby Surround.

Peter Howell comments: "Listening again to the score for The Five Doctors, it seems to represent a very particular period in time when the variety of sounds at our disposal was becom...

Miss Leslies Dolls Blu-ray cover

A rare specimen from the more deranged end of the Grindhouse spectrum, Miss Leslie's Dolls is a memorably demented tale of possession and transvestitism from director Joseph G. Prieto (who, under the name Joseph P. Mawra, directed the outrageous 1965 sexploitation "documentary" Chained Girls).

Believed lost for decades, it has been remastered from original film elements especially for this release.

Stranded in the backwoods during a thunderstorm, a beautiful teacher and her three promiscuous students take refuge at a lonely house owned by the middle-aged Miss Leslie. Miss Leslie, however, is less a mild-mannered spinster and more an axe-wielding, homi...
