One of the best movies of 2018 has one of the most atmospheric soundtracks which helps crank up this stunning paranormal picture to petrifying perfection.
Ghost Stories concerns a debunker of all things paranormal, Professor Phillip Goodman (Andy Nyman) who has devoted his life to exposing phony psychics and fraudulent supernatural shenanigans on his own television show. His skepticism is put to the test, when he receives a file of three chilling, inexplicable cases: a night watchman (Paul Whitehouse) haunted by disturbing visions, an edgy young man (Alex Lawther) involved in a car accident, and a wealthy former banker (Martin Freeman) visited by a spirit. Will they make a believer of him yet?
Composed by Frank Ilfman, this atmospheric and haunting collection of music suites and themes, pieces of dialogue and a couple of classic numbers helps you to appreciate just how much music adds to your cinematic experience. As the film concerns many human emotions so does too the score being heart-breaking one moment and truly frightening the next.
From the opening words of Phillip Goodman this OST drags you into a world where nothing is as it seems and the inclusion of these pieces from the movie add so much, punctuating the music with sombre, gut-wrenching lines of dialogue.
Priddle's Theme is a celebration of the fun you can have whilst unnerving people with music as its floaty, childlike with a tone of dread. The Allerton Suite is simply beautiful that ends with a fading effect that abruptly brings you back into this nightmare. Daddy's Got Meow Meow The Lullaby contains a delicate, lush moments as does Three Cases which is probably the stand out moment for me.
Into the Woods flashes opera vocals and pounding strings that fade into The Hellion which crashes around your ears like an explosion in a building made from sharp pieces of metal. Things Are Not What They Seem adds a surreal touch mixing deep voices and delicate strings where Corridor of Truth is an operatic moment that pierces the climate moments, if the hairs on the back of neck don't rise when listening to this then you're dead!
The experience ends with Goodman's Theme End Titles which eerily tries to ease you back into the real world and almost has this reviewer in tears. For music to be this emotional takes skill and Ilfman proves he is one of the finest composers around.
The inclusion of the classic from Bobby "Boris" Pickett and The Crypt Kickers track Monster Mash and Why from Anthony Newly help lull you into a false sense of security, Monster Mash helps chill you out and Why gets right under your skin, much in the same way as Tiptoe Through the Tulips did when used on Insidious.
Ilfman, who conducted the London Metropolitan Orchestra at Air Lyndhurst Studios has delivered the perfect accompaniment to a superior chiller. A soundtrack for those who love scaring themselves and those around them.

The "nature-runs-amok" genre is littered with plenty of forgettable pieces but there are a few gems such as Frogs (1972), Night of the Lepus (1972) and Dogs (1976) but apart from Orca: Killer Whale (1977), Grizzly is the one that gets closest to being the most realistic, if you take it with a very large pinch of salt and swap the jaws for paws!

The best thing about 88 Films is that they're giving us the chance to view some of the most obscure movies past and present and this cracker from Asia is one I've never heard of never mind seen before.

Ahh, just imagine what could have been. Wishmaster had all the elements needed for the birth of a great horror franchise; a superb cast, a great story and just the right amount of respect for the horror genre. Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow was a true showcase for world cinema. One of the stand out pieces came from Gabriela Amaral Almeida who wrote and directed Friendly Beast, a film so visceral yet beautiful at the same time, it left an indelible mark on this reviewer's mind.
It's nearly closing time at a struggling restaurant. Staff want to go home while the boss struggles with money troubles and a desire for more power in his life. When this movie was originally submitted to the BBFC for home release in 1989 nearly 3 minutes of cuts were made to the piece. Now, thanks to 88 Films we can enjoy this overlooked slasher in all its uncut gory glory. In fact, the BBFC site tells you "All previous BBFC cuts waived and material originally pre-cut by company restored" so hurrah!

Ever wished that Terry Gilliam made more movies? The man who gave us Jabberwocky, The Fisher King and Brazil gave the world a new perspective and encouraged budding movie makers around the world to make their own visions and to stick by what they wanted to create.

For a movie that's had a longer gestation period than any project I've known of, Attack of the Bat Monsters looks as if it could have been made yesterday, or the 1950s where its set! More on this later, here's what the film is about:
