The Surgeon - 10th Anniversary Details By
James Whittington, Friday 4th February 2011
Horror specialist publisher Rough Cut Comics will celebrate their tenth anniversary this year with a reprinting of their milestone title The Surgeon.
The prestige graphic novel follows the exploits of a time-traveling serial killer whose vehicle is constructed from living human bodies...and features an introduction by long-time fan Ramsey Campbell.
The comic-book company launched the original comic-series at the Cannes Film Festival ten years ago. The book was developed from a film project, backed by producers Alan (Circus) Latham and Vic (Dog Soldiers) Bateman, which was slated to star Richard E Grant and Peter Capaldi and shoot in the Isle of Man in 1999.
But co-production finance had fallen through and co-producer Ed Murphy turned his hand to developing the project as a comic-book title. The independent title became a smash-hit in the UK and the States, as well as being translated for Italy and Germany.
In his introduction, renowned horror writer Ramsey Campbell explained: “How could The Surgeon been struck off our cinema screens? This graphic adaptation of the original screenplay storyboards the film and gives us an idea how the movie might have looked. Fans of gruesome inventive horror will lap it up.”
The book’s artist Jaeson Finn also produced storyboards for Neil Marshall’s Doomsday and Centurion.
Publisher Ed Murphy feels vindicated by the success of the book title in relation to allowing the film production to fall by the wayside back in the nineties.
“It was a real downer,” admits Murphy, a horror enthusiast who was also involved in the Black Sunday Film Festivals in Manchester and Edinburgh. “But that’s the nature of the film business. The great thing about its development as a comic is that it gave us the benefit to produce $50 million stories as opposed to $5million ones.
“Nevertheless this compilation of the first two-issue mini series, a straight adaptation of the film screenplay, really conveyed the project $3.3million budget and this forms the basis of our anniversary book. I do think it beholds the spirit of those House of Hammer adaptations and early 2000AD. I’m immensely proud of it as a book.”
The book will be available in April 2011 although you can pre-order. For more information click here.
The Conjuring movies and their Annabelle spin-offs have already delivered some cool moments of paranormal terror but none seem to be as anticipated as the latest from this chilling universe, The Nun.
When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order's unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in "The Conjuring 2," as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.
Fan favorite writer Joe Casey (Sex, New Lieutenants of Metal) and artist Ian MacEwan come together to weave modern mythology for a new generation in the forthcoming MCMLXXV launching this September.
"This series is all about creating brand new iconography," said Casey. "It's about creating a new kind of folk hero that speaks to where we all are right now. Oh yeah... it's also about smashing monsters into the pavement with an enchanted tire iron."
In MCMLXXV, readers meet Pamela Evans. Much more than a typical Manhattan cab driver, she also happens to be a badass monster-fighter. Welcome to the year of her greatest adventure.

The stunning artwork for this year's annual Bank Holiday event, the UK's largest celebration of genre cinema, taking place at Cineworld Leicester Square and The Prince Charles Cinema between Thursday August 23rd and Monday August 27th.
For Graham, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' seemed too important to ignore: "In the same way that Frankenstein gave life to his monster, horror films stimulate our imagination and give form to ideas that otherwise dare not leave the shadows", he commented. "The painting shows our familiar host enjoying ...
