Why's Night Terror currently only available for iPhone?
By Horror Channel, Tuesday 11th March 2014

applemonster-android

With our award winning Night Terror App (watch the Video) receiving a whole heap of downloads, a 4.5/5 rating on iTunes, not to mentioned a MoTD (Mobile of the Day) award from the FWA, it’s understandable that ‘non-Apple’ users are annoyed that they are currently unable to download our nightmare inducing app.

But Android has more users!

Android is big, huge in fact, commanding a massive wedge of the smart phone market according to Gertner over 78% of Market Share compared to 15.6% of Apple’s iOS, Windows 3% and BB’s 2%.

gartner-screen grab

With this in mind it doesn’t seem to make much sense to initially choose to launch a mobile app on iOS and not Android? Has Horror Channel sold it’s soul to Apple? Are we a bunch of Apple loving Sheeple? Did we make a blunder?  We hope not…then why did the Night Terror App initially launched on iPhone?

First we’d like to apologise to Fans that can’t download the app, we really didn't want to alienate anyone.  That goes for people that can’t/won't update to iOS7, Android, Windows, BlackBerry users right through to Nokia 3310 users that are still getting their 3 days of battery life.

Reasons

We wanted to do something a little different with the launch of our first Horror Channel app, it had to be free but most importantly something that fans of Horror would really want to download and try out… an App that would generate nightmares sounded perfect.

dare

After reading a huge amount of research and speaking with professionals in the field of Oneirology (study of dreams) such as Dr.Barrett from ‘Harvard Medical School’ and Dr. J De Koninck of ‘University of Ottawa’, we knew it was going to be no simple task. The app would need to accurately track users Sleep Cycle to identify the REM dream phases which is key to altering dream content.

Developing Night Terror for Apple’s iOS meant ensuring the app worked correctly on a small number of iPhones and iPads.  Unfortunately developing on Android is not quite as simple, with almost 12,000 different devices on the market there is wide range of hardware differences such as screen sizes, processors, motion/position sensors.  Then there are a range of Android software versions; KitKat V4.4 is only on 1.4% of devices with Gingerbread V2.3.3 still the second most common platform.

Without getting too technical (sorry 3310 users) it’s was, quicker, easer, cheaper and safer to initially develop the App for Apple.  You may say they we took the easy option but we really wanted to launch an excellent but free app for as many people as possible to enjoy.

Again we’re sorry to have enraged all you ‘non-apple’ fans but we are working on putting out an Android version but by all means get over to Facebook and Twitter and tell us to hurry up or if you want a Windows or Blackberry version do let us know... but consider this, for a short while you’ll be able to safely DARE your irritating iPhone mates to give Night Terror a try!
