The Legendary Fabio Frizzi To Return To The Barbican This Halloween
By James Whittington, Sunday 1st June 2014

FF ImageWhen Fabio Frizzi took to the stage at London’s Union Chapel on October 31st, 2013 to present Frizzi 2 Fulci it marked a significant moment in the Italian composer’s distinguished career. There he was, at the age of 62, performing in the Capital for the very first time, thus cementing a lifelong love affair with the country’s musical landscape that began for Frizzi with The Beatles. It was a thrilling moment for the composer as he took to the stage in front of an absolutely heaving Union Chapel. What followed was one of the most rousing and incredible spectacles seen in London throughout all of 2013. A live recording of the show is currently being mastered at Abbey Road Studios for a future vinyl, CD & download release.

Since that triumphant evening, Frizzi has continued playing live dates in his native Italy and in Europe, whilst also returning to his first love – composing - having recently completed 2 new scores, one for a short film by Chris Milewski called The Cold Eyes Of Death, the second an as yet untitled score made for NYC underground film-maker Scooter McRae.

Now, Fabio Frizzi returns for his second Halloween where the pristine acoustics at the Barbican will play host to an even more spectacular night of Frizzi 2 Fulci. Frizzi is promising to go even deeper into his repertoire with new sequences and even more dynamic projections.

Italian film soundtracks and in particular horror scores are their own art form. From the early 1960s through to the mid 1980s, Italy was home to some of the finest soundtrack artists to have graced the genre. Names like Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Goblin, Guido & Maurizio De Angelis, Berto Pisano, Gianni Ferrio, Stelvio Cipriani, Armando Trovaoli, Riz Ortolani, Piero Piccioni and Alessandro Alessandroni were the forefathers who set out their creative stall, recording some mind-blowing scores that merged jazz, baroque, classical, rock, lounge, funk, psychedelia, and deep electronica. Fabio Frizzi would join that illustrious list of composers after cementing his reputation as one of the undisputed masters of Italian horror soundtracks, best known for his scores to the Italian film director Lucio Fulci’s seminal late 70s/early 80s blood soaked epics such as Seven Notes In Black/Sette Note In Nero, The Beyond, Zombi 2/Zombie Flesh Eaters, City Of The Living Dead and Manhattan Baby. Frizzi’s progressive, dark, brooding scores added a sonic richness to Fulci’s dreamlike visuals and they sound as disturbingly brilliant today as they did when first released. Other notable Frizzi original scores include ‘Contraband’ (1980), ‘Four Of The Apocalypse’ (1976) and another Fulci collaboration, the spaghetti western ‘Silver Saddle’ (1978).

Fabio Frizzi’s soundtracks are very influential and hugely respected works. Numerous musicians ranging from Boards Of Canada and Wu Tang’s RZA, through to the new synth breed of Umberto and Zombi have cited him as a major influence. Frizzi’s catalogue remains a popular source of samples for US hip-hop producers. Quentin Tarantino is a long-term admirer and insisted on using Seven Notes In Black for Kill Bill Vol 1. Eli Roth is the latest Hollywood director looking to secure his services.

For his return to the Capital, a highly enthused Frizzi said, “A very important commitment is once again tied to the city and people of London, this year at the Barbican for a very special Halloween: Where Frizzi 2 Fulci will be presented in a new version, within a first class arts venue that really excites myself and the whole band. In a sense coming back to London will be like going home to where it all began, but the responsibility will be even larger. And I'm going to take with me on stage at the Barbican something absolutely extraordinary.”

Frizzi 2 Fulci at the Barbican Hall on 31st October 2014. Produced by the Barbican in association with Paint In Black, as part of the Illuminations series.

The+Descent+Sleeve+1400x1400

Burning Witches Records will unleash the David Julyan score to one of the greatest British horror films ever made - The Descent on April 8th.

Neil Marshall's sophomore film, 2005's The Descent, brought the British filmmaker into Masters of Horror territory (and for good reason). The claustrophobic as hell look at a group of women exploring caves while also coming to terms with internal secrets, untreated trauma and if all of that wasn't bad enough: cave dwelling creatures, hungry for blood, shocked audiences worldwide and solidified Marshall as a filmmaker to watch out for.

The score helped amplify the on screen tension and is powerful enough t...

Demonia

Like many of his contemporaries, Godfather of Gore Lucio Fulci (City of the Living Dead, Don't Torture a Duckling) found his career on a downturn at the end of the 1980s as the bottom fell out of the Italian horror movie market.
