Booth's Blog: Celebrate FrightFest From Your Sofa!
By Emily Booth, Wednesday 17th August 2016

Emily Booth April PremieresOK, so not everyone can get down to the UK's biggest bloodiest horror festival of the year, FrightFest over the Bank Holiday weekend this month but are still gagging for the festival experience. Well fear not fiends because Horror Channel will not only be bringing you live broadcasts on 'Facebook Live' every evening direct from the fest, but we've concocted our very own TV version of the festival with double-bills of former festival hits over 13 nights including 7 outstanding film premieres - so it really is a win win for you this year whether you're there in flesh and blood or in spirit!

With a total of 26 films on offer during FrightFest Season I'm going to concentrate on the 7 UK TV premieres showing on Horror Channel that first found fame at the renowned festival. FrightFest Season Kicks off this Friday 19th August at 9pm with the UK TV premiere of The Sand. If like me, you love a tentacle or two then this is for you! After a graduation on the beach a group of sexy young thangs wake up to discover that somehow an otherworldly creature of huge proportions has spawned and is hiding beneath the sand, waiting to devour even a toe that touches it! Catch this fun, sexy summer horror flick on Friday.

The following day we bring you an atmospheric film that couldn't be more different to the popcorn pleasures of The Sand, with the UK TV premiere of Estranged. A girl returns to her childhood home when a near fatal accident obliterates her long-term memory, but soon the cracks begin to emerge beneath her seemingly loving family. Are they who they say they are? Estranged gets its UK TV premiere Saturday 20th at 10.55pm.

On the 21st at 10.40pm The Unfolding is a new take on the haunted house genre, setting the film against a backdrop of potential nuclear war, giving it a foreboding sense of dread that literally hangs in the air. A psychic researcher and his girlfriend travel to a supposed haunted house on Dartmoor and become embroiled in a horrific murder from the past.

We all know the genre loves to play on words and titles (thank you Shaun of the Dead!) and here we have Night Of The Living Deb released just last year at FrightFest. A story following the awkward, gawky but lovable Deb who, after a dream one night stand with a hot hunk, discovers (during her walk of shame) the country has succumbed to a zombie apocalypse... Night Of The Living Deb, a UK TV premiere Friday 26th at 9pm.

Next up comes a film that shocked the audience at FrightFest just last year turning out to be one of the biggest highlights of the entire event! A bizarre title Landmine Goes Click does indeed involve a landmine, the very unfortunate chap who steps on it (remember its not stepping on that's the problem its getting off it!) and his even more unfortunate girlfriend who finds herself the target of a perverted man willing to exploit her vulnerability. Catch this insanely tense horror Saturday 27th at 10.50pm.

The following day comes a clever little character study and postmodern take on the slasher flick that poses the scenario of life after the massacre! Yes we all know and love the 'final girl' in our slasher movies, but what happens to the poor girl after she survives the weapon wielding maniac?! Last Girl Standing is a UK TV premiere Sunday 28th at 11pm.

The final UK TV premiere in this formidable season coincides with the last day of FrightFest, Monday 29th August. Contrary to what the domestic title suggests, Curtain is not a boring domestic film but rather a surreal trip into a world of nightmares! A nurse discovers her new bathroom happens to contain a mysterious portal that opens to a world where nightmares come to life. Blending low budget 80's style SFX with surrealist high concept cinema pull it back to reveal all when Curtain opens on Horror on Monday 29th at 10.45.

Remember there are tons more festival favourites on offer during this 13 day season including Grabbers, The Human Centipede and Pan's Labyrinth - check here for TV listings.
