Booth's Blog: Ghost Stories - The Movie! Whoop Whoop!
By Emily Booth, Tuesday 8th March 2016

Emily with knifeMost of you already know the powerhouse talent of Andy Nyman and his love for, and contribution to the horror industry. Self confessed geek and fan this man directs and produces Derren Brown’s live shows, hosts the annual FrightFest quiz, stars in Severance, Black Death and Dead Set to name a few of his projects and also brought us the incomparable theatre production Ghost Stories, which after a runaway success in the West End was taken to Broadway. Is there no stopping him?! Well no, following his Broadway success he recently announced Ghost Stories the play will soon be turned into a film hopefully hitting cinemas in 2017.

I’m so excited Ghost Stories is to unleash it’s fear onto the silver screen and I tweeted Andy straight away to congratulate and also get a comment from the man himself; ‘We are so excited to be making a film of Ghost Stories, it is a dream come true. One of the things we are most excited about is bringing new twists and turns to the story so if you’ve seen the play there will be new surprises….’

A dramatic ‘dun dun dun’ is now playing in my head for I was one of those scared witless by the original play which ends with the delicious and devilish ‘Please keep the secrets of Ghost Stories to yourself!’ Yes the ending is such a good twist that to reveal it would be a huge plot spoiler and ruin it for prospective audiences. One of the best things about the play was how real and raw it felt.

Technically it was nothing short of brilliant being nominated for 2 Olivier awards. The live show took full advantage of stark and dramatic lighting, sound, props and even smell to fully engross and engage the audience in a horror experience that cuts very close to the bone. So much so that some people have literally fainted or worse during the show! Obviously taking the story to a film format it will not have the same ‘live’ feel where your heart leaps into your throat during it’s jump scenes. Perhaps Andy Nyman can go down the William Castle route of cinema gimmickry and have cinema seats vibrate during the scary scenes or throw a real life skeleton into the audience at an opportune moment! I asked him about Ghost Stories possibly being the perfect project to bring back this kind of vintage horror experience – blending theatre with film, but of course the reality of creating a prop or some kind of interactive element for each cinema screening the film is unfortunately just not feasible – but rest assured, if ANYONE knows how to manipulate your senses to the point of pant wetting, then Andy Nyman is it. He will terrify us in ways we probably never even knew with his film version of Ghost Stories which looks set to star himself alongside Martin Freeman and George Mackay and will be directed by Andy and of course Ghost Stories co-founder Jeremy Dyson.

More on this as it develops!

You can also see Andy Nyman acting in the network premiere of Chris Smith's Black Death on Horror Channel Friday March 25th 9pm.
