Booth's Blog: Mad Science Season Kicks Off February 6th
By Emily Booth, Thursday 5th February 2015

EB Mad Science image 2 SmallI am truly excited about February’s film season Mad Science (no slushy chick flicks for this ghoul on Valentines Day!) and Horror Channel have gone beyond the grave to make this a fun nostalgic season bringing you TV entertainment and movies “Just how is used to be!”

So this week I took to Twitter to gauge your opinions and memories on the films themselves. The season starts Friday 6th February with the explosive Scanners at 10.50pm and continues same time every Friday throughout the month with Basket Case, Class Of Nuke ‘Em High, with the very best I think saved for last, the Network Premiere of Re-Animator on Friday 27th. Taking to Twitter I discovered (not surprisingly) most of you getting animated for Re-Animator, this being the firm fan favourite, with Scanners a close second. I think one of the biggest strengths behind this season is the nostalgia it evokes. I’m sure I’m not alone in my fond memories of going down to my local video store, heading round the back and perusing with a lusty finger the sensationalist gaudy front covers of the demented Horror titles on VHS! It seems you too have been there…

Mike Flint ‏- Scanners - one of those 'have you seen it yet?' films at school in the 80s. Head-exploding fury. And Michael Ironside.

(monster man) ‏- oh we used to stand there for ages looking at the covers of the gore n horror films. ..

lennonsghost ‏- girls behind the counter called people like me 'Slice 'n Dice' cos I must've gone thru EVERY horror film they had in the shop

Scanners was the movie that brought a lot of fans to the mind of David Cronenberg this possibly being his most mainstream movie at the time. Who can forget the horrific image of Michael Ironside’s head on fire, his eyes pure white with rage right on the cover?! It really was a talking point. This was a time when people would go and rent a film based on the promise of one shocking moment.

The films have also made a dramatic impact on the general cultural consciousness too, take for example the brilliant Simpsons episode Treehouse of Horror VII in 1996. The first story of which see’s Bart discover his parents have been hiding his evil disfigured conjoined twin up in the attic keeping him alive with fisheads! A conscious nod to Basket Case.

Bruce Bush - a lads night in getting drunk on cans of colt 45 and watching basket case on VHS is a happy teenage memory.

Class Of Nuke ‘Em High is one of those marmite movies, love it or hate it. But the Troma films are like no other with their deranged gore, characters, script, reveling in the B movie badness with a political sting in the tail to boot.

But it is for Re-Animator that fans on twitter seemed the most wistful! A film evocative of pure 80’s video heaven. I don’t really need to talk about the films story as most of you know it, based on an HP Lovecraft story it tells the ultimate tale of a student doctor with increasingly unhinged and omnipotent tendencies who discovers how to re-animate dead tissue. In terms of the cultural impact this movie has had? Well do the words “Re-Animator The Musical” mean anything to you?! Yes 30 odd years on and this B movie horror gem is still doing the rounds, and has now joined the ranks of Rocky Horror and even made it to Las Vegas last year!

Here’s what the good horror folk on Twitter had to say on Re-Animator.

Gary McMullan ‏- ground breaking and controversial in their day they gave us iconic scenes and spawned a generation of disciples

Simon Bulgacs ‏- At the age of 12 had already read Lovecraft's books was pleasantly surprised how faithful Re-animator stayed to written version

GirlForceMovie ‏ - Scared us to death when we first saw it - didn't know it was supposed to be a comedy!

So there you have it, Mad Science Season is bound to tap into the veins of horror fans everywhere, see it, re-live it, re-visit it. Join me in the Horror Lab every Friday night at 10.50pm for my movie introductions!

Next week: February IS Women in Horror Month loads to see and do, hell you can even hook yourself up and do something good for the world and donate blood!

Shameless Entertainment
Certificate 18
****

Also known as Aquarius, Deliria and Bloody Bird, Michele Soavi's bold directorial debut Stagefright finally gets the Shameless treatment. Released at the backend of the slasher trend this 1987 effort takes the genre in a far more artistic direction than most of the era and stands up to close scrutiny to this day. More recent movies such as Halloween (2018) and Climax (2018) seems to have taken some themes from this which is a fine reminder of why slasher movies don't just start and end with the more famous franchises.

When a masked killer infiltrates a group of actors rehearsing overnight in an isolated theatr...
