Booth's Blog: The pint-sized, potty-mouthed killer doll is back!
By Emily Booth, Wednesday 24th May 2017
But did you know he was based on a true story? Yes the lore surrounding Chucky is actually pretty extensive. He burst on to the scene back in 1988 in the first Child's Play movie gaining notoriety and success for its unusual blend of shocking horror and tongue in cheek entertainment. Well it's not often you see a child-like doll shouting strings of colourful obscenities. Touching on various taboos such as the contamination of an innocent, the film's plotline and backstory was theatrical to say the least. A serial killer and practitioner of voodoo called Charles Lee Ray manages to transfer his soul to that of a 'Good Guy' doll as he lays dying in a toy shop. That very same doll winds up in the hands of six-year-old Andy and so begins an unhealthy relationship as the serial killer then tries to possess the body of Andy instead (who wants to be an obnoxious pint-sized ginger doll any longer than necessary, right?) To cut a looooong story short (the Chucky franchise is about to enjoy its 7th entry in the series with this year's Cult of Chucky), Horror Channel has the pleasure of showing the network premiere of the 5th film Seed of Chucky, so I'm trying to bring you up to speed!

The Child's Play series however took a slightly dark turn in popular culture with Child's Play 3, when the film was partly blamed for the sick and horrific murder of James Bulger. The claim has since been relegated by Merseyside Police who could find no direct evidence of this, but it did of course give the franchise much unwanted bad press, being scapegoated for a vile act and dragging the moral panic of the 'video nasty' back into the limelight.

The films took a more comedic route with titles such as Bride of Chucky seeing the killer doll have sex with a lady doll (voiced by Jennifer Tilly), resulting in what must be the first ever 'doll gives birth' moment in movie history. Both demented and hilarious, this tongue-in-cheek style of humour really goes for the jugular in this week's Seed of Chucky, which takes the franchise into very meta territory as both Chucky and his wife Tiffany somehow end up as props on a Jennifer Tilly horror movie, where Tilly plays both herself and voices the Tiffany doll. Be prepared for some real B movie moments when Chucky kills 'king of kitsch' John Waters and delivers one of his infamous one liners 'Oops I did it again' when he kills off Britney Spears!

But for those interested in the creepy real life inspiration behind Chucky, read on. He is actually based on an apparent real haunted doll known as Robert The Doll, a one-off creepy little thing that was given to a young boy from a wealthy family in 1906 by a servant who had an extensive knowledge of voodoo. It's said she'd been a victim of abuse by the child's parents and had cursed the doll to exact her revenge. The child (Robert Eugene Otto) developed an 'unhealthy' relationship with the doll that continued into adulthood, he spoke about him and to him as if he were real and took the doll everywhere, until things got very strange and Eugene Otto began to feel afraid of the doll, blaming him for all the bad things that happened. The doll is now in the East Martello museum in Florida, donated after its current owner had enough of all the strange noises, giggling and sounds of moving furniture she heard in her home. Well that's made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end!

The network premiere of Seed Of Chucky is on Horror this Friday 26th May at 9pm.
