Booth's Blog: Things Are Getting Wild This Weekend On Horror
By James Whittington, Thursday 6th October 2016
Emily with knifeOur two film premieres on Friday and Saturday both revel in testosterone-driven feral violence where alpha males (and the odd female!) dig deep into their primal 'fight or flight' instincts in order to survive...

I think there's an increasing fascination with man's primal spirit as it sits within an increasingly inhuman, technological world where we are no longer identified by our actions, but by our social media pages!

First up comes Wilderness starring regular 'hire-a-hard-man' Sean Pertwee. When a gang of bullying convicts causes the death of a fellow inmate, their gov'nor sends them packing to a remote island to learn survival skills, build character, and hopefully gain a little perspective in the whole 'life's worth living' stakes. But on arrival, the men discover bear traps, crossbows, and salivating dogs at the ready to tear them apart. Perhaps rehabilitation is not the point here, but rather retribution... Imagine Battle Royale meets Bear Grylls, and you've got Friday night's network premiere in the body bag! So it's time to 'be a man and grow a pair' apparently, or you can just sit back and watch how the tough nuts do it (invariably getting themselves killed in horrific ways)! Wilderness premieres on Friday 7th at 9pm.

The following evening sees the network premiere of the brilliant and timely Eden Lake; a film that helped to define the 'Hoodie Horror'. For those who may not know, the Hoodie Horror genre took a very normal, very real threat (the urban British thug), and turned him into a horror villain whilst simultaneously casting a light over the emerging fear of gang violence in the UK. Hoodie Horror incorporates the Home Invasion genre with the likes of Cherry Tree Lane, Them (Ils), Community, and Heartless, to name a few. Eden Lake stars Kelly Reilly and Michael Fassbender as a loved-up couple on a camping trip who run into a posse of horrible feral youths who decide to teach the trendy urban couple a lesson... This is intense and disturbing stuff, and signifies a portrayal of how we've come to fear modern disaffected youth. Eden Lake gets its network premiere Saturday 8th Oct at 10.55pm.
