Booth's Blog: Unmissable premieres this Halloween Weekend!
By Emily Booth, Friday 28th October 2016
Emily with chopperThat unholy union between Horror Channel and FrightFest opens its jaws once again for an epic Halloween FrightFest Weekend Special featuring a whopping sixteen movies including four eye-popping, jaw-dropping premieres. Read all about it!

We're all busy chaps so I'm just going to jump right in there with the big ones. This Friday we have the network premiere of Frankenstein's Army; an imaginarium of World War 2-come-steampunk Nazi nastiness. A battalion of Russian soldiers lost in German territory stumbles upon an old church where below ground unthinkable experiments are taking place by a mad descendant of Dr Frankenstein! Raising an army of unstoppable soldiers, flesh meshes with machine as Nazi cyber warriors pimped up with an array of disturbing weaponry are unleashed. The demented designs of the mech monsters are the stars here with the director thankfully steering clear of yucky CGI, so get ready to meet Frankenstein's Army when it gets its Network Premiere Friday 28th Oct at 11.10pm.

The following evening comes Haunter from director Vincenzo Natali of the brilliant Cube and Splice; this alone tells us you're in for some fresh high-concept horror, what with Natali being a purveyor of original storytelling. Described as The Others meets Groundhog Day, this is a reverse ghost story where the roles of the living and the dead are not so obvious. Lisa and her family are stuck in a time loop of doom on the last day of 1985, before they were all murdered by the 'Haunter'. Only now Lisa has woken up, and it seems the killer is back on the hunt and after fresh new blood. Lead actress Abigail Breslin is making quite a name for herself as a Scream Queen to watch, with Final Girl, Zombieland, and Fear, Inc. under her belt. Don't miss Haunter - a UK TV premiere on Saturday 29th Oct at 9pm.

The horror continues on Sunday 30th with a film that startled the FrightFest cinema audience back in 2008 when it received its UK premiere in Leicester Square, and became the most talked about movie of the festival, before receiving a Hammer Films remake in 2010. Let The Right One In is a Swedish vampire story, but has a look and tone never before seen in a horror. Set in a depressing suburb in '80s Stockholm, Oskar is a lonely 12-year-old boy bullied by classmates, who finds a friend in the new girl next door, Eli. Only he's soon to discover she isn't really a girl at all...! The duo strikes up an unlikely friendship of love, protection, and revenge. Taking the vampire very seriously, this is one of the most touching films you'll ever see, as much about burgeoning adolescence and social misfits as it is about blood and gore. Let The Right One In gets its network premiere at 10.35pm.

We all need a good scare on Halloween, and there's a lot of fun to be had with our Halloween night UK TV premiere, V/H/S. Meshing the two popular horror genres of Found Footage and Anthology, this new wave in horror has already seen two sequels and the similar film ABC's of Death. Here we have five separate stories by five different directors, interlinked by the wraparound story. A group of rather reprehensible lads is hired to steal a rare videotape, but when they enter the building, they discover a dead body surrounded by screens and various tapes, and so they begin to watch... Everyone has their favourite 'segment' (I loved 'Amateur Night' by David Bruckner), but there are also films from Ti West, Adam Wingard, and Radio Silence to be enjoyed here. V/H/S gets its UK TV premiere on Horror on Monday 31st October at 10.45pm.

Let's not forget, we also have three horror hits between the premieres every night of this four-night bender, including Donnie Darko, I Spit on Your Grave, Oldboy, Banshee Chapter, and Hatchet 2 spilling the red stuff to name just a few.

Must-see movies to see before you die, FrightFest Halloween Weekend starts this Friday at 9pm!

HC: Where did the idea for They're Outside come from?

AH: This idea for They're Outside came from a couple of things. I remember as a kid hearing that my uncle suffered mild agoraphobia, and when I learned what it was, I was fascinated by this idea of some people being kind of scared to leave their homes. Of course, the recent Covid-19 events h...

From the team behind BBC's critically acclaimed Sherlock came Dracula, the reimagining of the iconic titular vampire for a 21st Century audience. Composers David Arnold and Michael Price reunited with writers and creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, to breathe musical life into another famous literary character from Victorian times.

For Dracula, Arnold and Price conceived an innovative and petrifying score, in which traditional instruments and musique concrete merge with contemporary use of samples and sound design.

Scoring Dracula presented its own challenges and the composers have augmented the sound of the orchestra players by creating a library...
