By James Whittington, Tuesday 15th April 2014
In case you didn’t already know Social Media and online press have been buzzing with the news that Doctor Who is coming to Horror!
This titan of British TV crashed through the cosmos on the BBC back in 1963 and after a slight hiatus is still wowing audiences young and old! But its been a very long time since any channel screened back-to-back episodes of the most revered classic adventures from 1963-89 over one weekend!
Horror Channel put on an amazing launch event on Monday 14th at the prestigious Ivy Club in London filled with original costumes, Daleks and Cybermen brought all the way down from Cardiff by the good folk at the Beeb but more importantly Mr Tom Baker himself was there to help launch the Who on Horror weekend.
Now - as my wonderful twitter fiends know I recently put out a tweet asking for questions for the one and only Tom Baker, the 4th Doctor who has really embraced Doctor Who showing on Horror.
“Horror is my very favourite genre,” he said, “so I am thrilled the classic Doctor Who series has been picked up by the Horror Channel." Because he’s such an ardent fan of horror himself he’s genuinely looking forward to reaching a more horror loving crowd – you.
So – I got quite a few questions in, and chose the four best ones to ask Tom during my one on one with him! So well done to the chaps and chapettes below, you really were part of “When Booth met Baker: The Interview….”
Emily Booth: Via Twitter Jinx asked “What period of your career would you like to revisit to give your younger self advice and what advice would that be?”
Tom Baker: I can’t give advice especially not to myself but if I could re-live it I would re-live the period of 1974 right up to 1981 that would be wonderful. That was the best era of my whole life. (The time Tom served as The Doctor)
EB: Better than childhood?
TB: Well it was different, my childhood really was very happy, I was very loved as a child, my mother adored me that’s what gave me the taste for adoration, I wanted to be adored.
EB: So did acting come very naturally to you?
TB: Well it comes from the impulse, I did train of course but I think all children have the impulse, but it seems to me most people would like to be somebody else, otherwise I can’t explain fashion – people want to be someone else or be like someone else, so I wanted to be something splendid, like all children do. And I was lucky that’s all.
EB: Neil Evans on Twitter asked “Do you still have the famous scarf?”
TB: I haven’t got the original scarf because that’s in a museum where I’m expected to go – when I die (he said dryly) they’ve already appointed a taxidermist - I’ll be in the museum with the scarf. But I do have one, I do have a cashmere Doctor Who scarf which must be 20 odd feet long.
EB: Kelly Reilly asked via Twitter “Is it time for a female Doctor or even a ginger?”
TB: (laughs) I was ginger haired wasn’t I? I think I was, or auburn maybe I was auburn – but why wouldn’t a female Doctor work – why not? With a male assistant? It would be nice, I wouldn’t mind being the assistant to some little girl about your size – how tall are you?
EB: I’m tiny about 5ft 4 – you’re very big!
TB: (smirking) Well I’m not so big on all fours.
EB: Vampyr in Chains asked via Twitter “Did you ever think the jellybaby line would be so iconic?”
TB: No I had no idea, it was one of those silly things that I put in as a typical bad joke in critical situation to respond to – if someone says “You’ve got 5 minutes to live…” you can imagine saying “You haven’t got a jelly baby have you?” I don’t like them myself. People send me a lot though.
EB: Did you ever have any accidents on set?
TB: I broke my shoulder on the very first episode yes. I carried on, what they did was get a body double for the action shots and zoomed in on me for all the close ups!
There were tons of other good questions but I had to keep it pretty short and sweet. Tom is a very active wonderful 80 year old man with the best sense of humour and warmth ever, he had the whole room engaged and in fits of laughter with his cheekiness. Thanks to all the twitter peeps who got involved with the Tom Baker interview.
Who on Horror starts this Friday 18th April at 7pm with the very first episode An Unearthly Child starring William Hartnell and continues all weekend in a specially curated series that sees 7 adventures featuring each of the 7 classic Doctors and continues throughout April and May. ENJOY!!!!

The 1950s are remembered as the rock 'n' roll years - Bill Haley and Elvis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry - but also as the dawn of the atomic era, the height of the cold war, and the decade when science fiction movies reigned. A fad for futuristic design meant cars sported sharkfins like Flash Gordon's spaceship, and refrigerators were streamlined behemoths like the lumbering robots of pulp magazines. It was an uneasy, nervous decade - caught between optimism and terror, envisioning future homes full of gleaming labour-saving devices but also beasts from outer space or the dawn of time rampaging across the land, leaving radioactive debris in their wake. At the end of the classic The Thing From Another World (1951), ...SHARE: READ MORE Horror Channel has such sights to show you with broadcast of Hellraiser Trilogy

Brought back from the edge of damnation by the blood of his brother, Larry (Andrew Robinson), Frank rises to feed on the souls of others. The Sun Makers is the first commercial release of Dudley Simpson's distinctive Doctor Who score, to be made available in physical, digital and vinyl formats.
Famously, the Christian conservative campaigner Mary Whitehouse misunderstood Doctor Who to be a children's programme and thanks to her relentless fight, the BBC was forced to replace the programme's original production team. The new team was under orders to curb the violence and replace it with a more playful and comedic fantasy tone. The result was The Sun Makers, featuring Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor and Louie Jameson as his assistant Leela. Robert Holmes's story was a clever and amusing spoof of bureaucracy and the tax system, ...SHARE: READ MORE Discover a new Eden in April thanks to Tim Lebbon
