Booth's Blog - Get Your Horror For Free!
By Emily Booth, Friday 13th March 2015

BB 1The biggest news this week, and it’s quite a whopper, is that Horror Channel has found a new and additional lair with which to scare the pants off the public; Freeview.

Yes, today, Friday the 13th (well when else?) you can watch our superb channel for free on Channel 70, meaning we are now sinking our fangs potentially into 17 million UK homes and I’m so excited about this. (Mwah ha ha my plan for eternal dark domination is beginning to take shape!)

This got me thinking about how my career in TV, now spanning a shocking 2 decades has been shaped by the changing ways in which we watch TV with the emergence of other TV platforms such as Cable providing alternative, dare I say counter cultural TV entertainment to that offered up by the mainstream 5!

I remember when there was just BBC 1, 2 and ITV! Then came the cool and revolutionary Channel 4 in 1982 which kept us happy for the next 15 years when Channel 5 came along in 1997! Channel 5’s remit at the time was to provide glossy sassy and even (post 9pm) saucy TV. I was soon to be a part of this but my first TV job came when I auditioned for a presenting position for L!VE TV; a youth orientated TV channel started by Janet Street Porter. I got the job doing a show called ‘Blue Review’ and it became invaluable for learning the tricks of the trade. I loved this job but it ended with the death of L!VE TV in 1999, but by this point I’d been asked to present irreverent gaming show BITS for Channel 4, and I know many of you loved this show!

Asides from Channel 5 which was still showing strange random stuff like ‘Out There’ that I presented in 2003 (a mix of kung Fu, horror and kinky film clips!) it was down to the less mainstream channels to take chances and produce fun weird youth TV. BRAVO became the new home of ‘in your face’ male oriented TV and here I found a home with my cult TV show “Shock Movie Massacre.” Believe it or not the production company and myself got a 15 part TV series on the back of a 2 page word document and 1 meeting. Boom – we got a series. It was so ‘go getting’ and easier back then!

I guess it all comes down to budgets, the mood of the nation and the trends but I think it’s a shame we’ve lost our sense of irreverence, of punk and of experimentation.

Coming full circle now and I’m back on the Freeview platform this being the new home of Horror but this isn’t the first time! Formerly also the home of FTN which had me presenting those dubious live quiz shows and then came NUTS TV where I hosted the Gadget Girl slot!

So Freeview is about to feel the wrath of Horror and for Freeview viewers this is a very welcome addition. A channel that celebrates every nuance, sub genre and talent within Horror. A channel that offers exciting themed seasons, interviews, UK premieres, mainstream horror, edgy horror, experimental horror, documentaries, every decade and country is covered. Basically Horror Channel is the ONLY channel where we literally do have every dark recess of the human imagination and it’s manifestation in film – covered.

Remember to tell your ‘Freeview’ fiends to retune their box and indulge their darker sides with Horror Channel’s launch on Freeview Channel 70 this Friday the 13th!

Hatchet for The Honeymoon

From director Mario Bava, the Godfather of Italian horror, comes Hatchet for the Honeymoon, a superlative early 70s slasher which places us and the erstwhile filmmaker back in the realm of the Gialli feature, a cinematic sub-genre he practically invented. Shameless Entertainment
Certificate 18
****

Also known as Aquarius, Deliria and Bloody Bird, Michele Soavi's bold directorial debut Stagefright finally gets the Shameless treatment. Released at the backend of the slasher trend this 1987 effort takes the genre in a far more artistic direction than most of the era and stands up to close scrutiny to this day. More recent movies such as Halloween (2018) and Climax (2018) seems to have taken some themes from this which is a fine reminder of why slasher movies don't just start and end with the more famous franchises.

When a masked killer infiltrates a group of actors rehearsing overnight in an isolated theatr...
