Clown DVDClown - DVD Review

Studiocanal

Certificate 18

Extras: None

From producer and splatter-maestro Eli Roth comes the creepy shocker Clown. Billed as a nightmarish tale of a doting father who undergoes a gruesome, bloodthirsty transformation, the film has a dark centre beating away inside its blood-splattered heart, and a baddie that is anything but fun, this clown eats children!

It’s Jack's 10th birthday, but the clown has cancelled. His dad, Kent (Andy Powers), finds an old clown suit in the attic and saves the party. But after the party is over, Kent has a problem… the suit won't come off. What starts as a joke quickly turns into a hellish nightmare. Kent can feel himself changing, and his desperate attempts to free himself just leave him in agonising pain. As the suit takes hold of his body, Kent slowly endures a brutal transformation. As he changes, an uncontrollable hunger begins to consume him, an overwhelming and insatiable hunger… for children.

Hugely entertaining and packed with nightmarish imagery, Clown is a top-notch slasher with a cast that really do enter into the spirit of it. Andy Powers as the poor father gives a deep and heartfelt performance of a man slowly being possessed and is ably supported by Peter Stormare and Laura Allen. Forget how bizarre it all sounds, this is an incredibly effective shocker with a script from Christopher D. Ford and director Jon Watts that keeps the movie rattling on at a fair old pace. There are amazing set-pieces here that are inventive, pretty nerve shredding and packed with incredibly detailed pay offs! The moments where the main character tries to finish himself off lead to some pretty intense moments.

Seriously, this is a great horror that shows you just how the slasher genre can be just as much fun as other horror genres. It does take itself seriously, which may surprise you but this clown is as freaky and nightmare making as Pennywise from It.

It has plenty of blood and gore, the clown make up is subtle enough to creep out anyone and those who don't suffer from coulrophobia will get sleepless nights after watching this. The disc I had to review had no extras on it and can’t confirm if the finished edition contains any.

This is a killer of a clown movie that will have many steering clear of circuses for quite some time to come.

Kim Newman looks to the future and reports on Horror's up and coming Classic Sci-Fi Weekend
Posted in Features, Monday 6th April 2020

The 1950s are remembered as the rock 'n' roll years - Bill Haley and Elvis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry - but also as the dawn of the atomic era, the height of the cold war, and the decade when science fiction movies reigned. A fad for futuristic design meant cars sported sharkfins like Flash Gordon's spaceship, and refrigerators were streamlined behemoths like the lumbering robots of pulp magazines. It was an uneasy, nervous decade - caught between optimism and terror, envisioning future homes full of gleaming labour-saving devices but also beasts from outer space or the dawn of time rampaging across the land, leaving radioactive debris in their wake. At the end of the classic The Thing From Another World (1951), ...

For the first time in physical form the score to The Sun Makers.
Posted in News, Sunday 15th March 2020

The Sun Makers is the first commercial release of Dudley Simpson's distinctive Doctor Who score, to be made available in physical, digital and vinyl formats.

Famously, the Christian conservative campaigner Mary Whitehouse misunderstood Doctor Who to be a children's programme and thanks to her relentless fight, the BBC was forced to replace the programme's original production team. The new team was under orders to curb the violence and replace it with a more playful and comedic fantasy tone. The result was The Sun Makers, featuring Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor and Louie Jameson as his assistant Leela. Robert Holmes's story was a clever and amusing spoof of bureaucracy and the tax system, ...
