Exclusive Interview with Lois Winstone, star of When Evil Calls
By James Whittington, Sunday 1st July 2007
Lois Winstone is one of our most accomplished young actors. She already has some very credible acting credits to her name as well as touring with her own Hip-Hop band. We caught up with her to talk about When Evil Calls as well as her musical career.

ZH: What attracted you to the acting profession?

Lois Winstone: The wisdom of self expression, to be able to create and portray such interesting characters, to put all anger and fear into one dynamic role, to show various emotion on screen and stage.

ZH: Where did you get your big break?

Lois Winstone: I guess I’ve been working as a performer and artist for some years now spreading out creative vibes is what I love to do. I started acting in my late teens and have progressively grown to acknowledge and admire the industry. Singing with my electronic Hip-Hop band “CRACKVILLAGE” has opened many doors for me and currently recording a second album. ‘Breaking through’ to what I know, is success, I believe only comes with the path you take, I don’t believe I’ve had a break as such, just a journey of working with talented actors and musicians, building myself up to prepare for bigger and more prosperous roles. Indeed there is a lot to learn; having great parents that have believed in me has always helped.

ZH: How did you get involved with When Evil Calls?

Lois Winstone: I’d just finished filming London Love Story and my on screen boyfriend Alex told me about the project and then arranged for me to meet the gang in Kensington, really buzzed off Ben’s (Grass) amazing energy, what a lovely man. A month later we started filming.

ZH: What did you think of the script?

Lois Winstone: The dialogue was pretty hilarious; I was quite intrigued to be in such a gory horror. There was a lot of improvising which I think really allowed the characters to get there teeth into there roles.

ZH: Are you a horror movie fan?

Lois Winstone: Absolutely, I spent most of my young years watching dark films; it brings out a certain fear we all yearn to enjoy within ourselves.

ZH: What’s the main difference between working on a mobile movie, something that’s designed for the small screen rather than say a TV or cinema screen?

Lois Winstone: Well this time round it seemed liked an extremely speeded up process, like an advert or music video, every motion had to be timed, with this I praised the film crew for such patience and professionalism, the main difference was that it was done in such a short space of time.

ZH: What was the atmosphere like on set?

Lois Winstone: Laughs and more laughs!

ZH: Do clowns scare you?

Lois Winstone: Only George Bush!

ZH: Did the levels of gore and nudity surprise you?

Lois Winstone: Never, we’re all naked underneath our clothes and fascinated by blood!

ZH: Did you know you were working on something that hadn’t been done before?

Lois Winstone: Yes, ‘tis always good to start a trend!

ZH: Your character Kirsty is rather nasty to say the least; do you and her share any traits?

Lois Winstone: Not really, I based her on a bully I knew at school, always interesting to play the baddie with f*****d up insecurities, don’t you think!

ZH: Would you star in another mobile movie?

Lois Winstone: If it pays well (laughs)

ZH: Tell us about your group “Crack Village”

Lois Winstone: We’re RAW! We’re playing Lost Vagueness at Glastonbury music festival this summer, check our myspace for some live gig action.

ZH: Will we be able to catch you be on tour soon?

Lois Winstone: This summer, will begin a tour of U.K then Europe

ZH: What do you have lined up acting wise?

Lois Winstone: I start an interesting project ‘UNCUT’ directed by Philip West, a psychological thriller based on a group of young cabaret actors trapped in a theatre with a unknown murderer, this 90 minute feature will be filmed in one shot.

ZH: Lois Winstone, thank you very much.
