Glasgow Film Night Celebrates Disability in Horror

Popcorn Horror launches the first film event celebrating the work of disabled horror creators, actors, and exploring the relationship between horror and disability.

In honour of the third annual Disability in Horror Month, Glasgow based horror collective Popcorn Horror have announced a unique night of scary films by disabled filmmakers, featuring disabled actors, or contributing to the conversation on representation in film media. The event is set to take place in Renfield St. Stephens Centre on Friday 28 June.

From Tod Browning's controversial 1932 film, Freaks, to more recent examples such as Hush, horror and disability have shared an uneasy relationship. Archetypal villains, disposable characters, and shock reveals have - for the most part - prevented viewers from experiencing horror media with complex, realistic disabled characters. The Disability in Horror Month campaign aims to challenge stereotypical portrayals, showcase the work of creators with disabilities, and encourage greater diversity in horror media.

The leading feature film of the evening is hit zombie film Redcon-1, an independent film made in the UK, directed by Chee Keong Cheung. The film features actress Olivia Story, who is an amputee. Originally auditioning as an extra, Olivia was given a larger role in the zombie film which allowed her to use her disability to her advantage. Redcon-1 concerns the joint effort of eight military personnel, trying to save a scientist from the clutches of death during a mass zombie outbreak. Unlike traditional zombies from similar franchises, these zombies have retained certain human traits, being able to fight back, and use weapons.

As well as the main film, the Redcon-1 team also created a short documentary about Olivia's experiences, which will screen after the feature. This will be followed by a cast and crew Q&A, giving horror fans the opportunity to engage with talented UK creators from the Redcon-1 team.

"Along with all of the Redcon-1 team, we're very honoured to be a part of Popcorn Horror's Disability in Horror Month and pleased to be able to support and celebrate this important event." said - writer, director and producer Chee Keong Cheung, "On Redcon-1 we had the opportunity to work with a young and very talented actress called Olivia Story, a triple amputee. After her experience on Redcon-1, it has encouraged her to want to pursue a career in acting. We were so inspired by her story, we decided to make a short film to allow her to share her story with others. Film is such an incredible medium with its ability to connect people, different cultures and communities through both storytelling and the filmmaking experience."

A programme of short films will also screen alongside the main feature, showcasing the work of talented disabled filmmakers from around the world.

Horror fans can expect a night of spooks and scares, while supporting the representation of disabled people in film. Renfield St. Stephens Centre is accessible by wheelchairs, and Redcon-1 will be screened with subtitles. Tickets are £6, and complimentary tickets for carers etc. can be provided.
