Horror Channel Salutes The Asylum
By James Whittington, Tuesday 8th June 2010

100_million_years_bc

Formed in 1997, motion picture company The Asylum was the brainchild of David Michael Latt, David Rimawi and Sherri Strain. Over a short space of time their low budget films (soon to labelled "mockbusters" by some critics as their movie titles were similar to major studio releases) grabbed the attention of film lovers who liked their fantasy and horror movies to have that little bit extra in the way of entertainment.

Usually outrageous in tone with a quick duration time, Asylum movies appeal to many because they are made primarily to entertain their audience and seem not to be focused on generating merchandising sales. No, to grab an audience the Asylum give their movies the most outrageous titles going and the most original plots they can. Movies such as 30,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Invasion Of The Pod People and AVH: Alien Vs Hunter have all found loyal followings. To give an example of how different Asylum are they released their own Sherlock Holmes movie last year, only this Sherlock came up against dinosaurs! Let’s not forget the amazing Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus, a film which had millions of people logging on to the internet just to see the trailer.

Here (in no particular order) are five of the finest from The Asylum which can be seen at the moment on Horror Channel.

100 Million BC
Jurassic chills and monstrous man-eating mayhem are just some of the fine ingredients to be found in100 Million BC. Here, a failed time-travel experiment transports a very hungry T-Rex to the streets of downtown Los Angeles causing death, destruction and carnage. This recent creature feature captures the spirit of early B-Movies and gives them a wonderfully gory contemporary polish.

The Day The Earth Stopped
You want action packed Sci-Fi thrills then you need to see The Day The Earth Stopped. Intergalactic robots threaten to destroy the Earth unless they are shown the value of humanity. Can anyone restore order before the planet is blasted to smithereens? Violent, tense and chilling, this is one invasion movie that will have you cowering with fear.

Snakes On A Train
This slithering shocker concerns vicious vipers who are unleashed when a woman, stricken by a powerful curse, tries to escape her fate. But will she make it to the station before the creatures snare her in their poisonous grasp? Well, what do you think that happens?

Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus
The larger than life sea creature feature Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus contains exactly what the title suggests. Starring 80s singing sensation Deborah Gibson (AKA Debbie Gibson) it concerns scientists attempting to rid the oceans of two deep sea behemoths by pitting them against each other in a brutal fight to the death.

War Of The Worlds 2: The Next Wave
This out of this world sequel is set two years after the original Martian attack. The people of Earth need to combat another invasion from Mars as the deadly alien forces are threatening to return and destroy our planet. Only a daring raid on Mars itself can save us. Sci-fi shocks and chilling horror combine to create a movie that destroys other alien invasion movies. Well worth staying in for.

As you can see, Asylum movies have more varieties than a certain baked bean manufacturer. Long may they continue to deliver such wondrous and entertaining delights.

For the first time in physical form the score to The Sun Makers.
Posted in News, Sunday 15th March 2020

The Sun Makers is the first commercial release of Dudley Simpson's distinctive Doctor Who score, to be made available in physical, digital and vinyl formats.

Famously, the Christian conservative campaigner Mary Whitehouse misunderstood Doctor Who to be a children's programme and thanks to her relentless fight, the BBC was forced to replace the programme's original production team. The new team was under orders to curb the violence and replace it with a more playful and comedic fantasy tone. The result was The Sun Makers, featuring Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor and Louie Jameson as his assistant Leela. Robert Holmes's story was a clever and amusing spoof of bureaucracy and the tax system, ...

The concept is nice and straight forward: Project Tic-Toc is an experimental Time Machine project which has been created at huge cost by the United States Government. So far, their efforts have designed and built "The Time Tunnel", a sort of multi-dimensional corridor you can walk down to enter "the living past or future" in any point of time. But after a decade the Government want real results after such an investment and ask for volunteers to prove that the project works. Up steps Dr. Anthony Newman (James Darren, yes, THE James Darren) who defies all attempts to stop him f...
