By James Whittington, Friday 12th June 2015
Horror Channel is to dedicate a whole night’s programming to the cinematic legacy of Christopher Lee who died yesterday aged 93.
On July 2nd from 9pm we’ll bring you four of Lee’s finest pieces; The Devil Rides Out, Dracula: Prince Of Darkness, Scars Of Dracula and To The Devil A Daughter which are now considered to contain some of his finest moments.
The Devil’s Rides Out at 9pm is a Satanic shocker where Lee stars alongside Charles Gray and concerns two men who discover their recently deceased friend's son is involved in the occult and must battle the evil forces of darkness to save him. Made in 1968, it brings the classic Dennis Wheatley novel vividly to life with a strong cast lead impeccably by Lee.
At 10.55pm Lee brings his most famous screen role to life in Dracula: Prince Of Darkness (1965). Two couples touring Eastern Europe ignore the dire warnings of locals and visit the castle home of the sinister Count Dracula. Lee is joined by genre legends Barbara Shelley and Andrew Keir for this his second time playing the famous Count.
Lee returns as the blood-sucking Count at 12.45am in his fifth Dracula appearance for Hammer in Scars Of Dracula (1970). A young man and his girlfriend travel to Dracula's mountain-top castle in search of his brother who disappeared in mysterious circumstances.
The night finishes with Lee’s final film for Hammer of the 70s, the supremely dark To The Devil A Daughter (1976) at 2.35am. A former priest sets up a satanic cult and plans to hand a girl's soul to the Devil. However, the girl's father and an occult novelist try to stop the plot. Nastassja Kinski stars alongside Lee in this adaptation of Dennis Wheatley’s classic novel.
Stewart Bridle, Horror Channel’s manager said today: “'We feel the movies chosen for the night represent some of his most iconic characters and performances during his time with Hammer Films and in the horror genre. Watching these you realise why he was so highly respected as a fantastic character actor who could both be a stoic hero and also a terrifying villain. He will be greatly missed but he lives on through his amazing legacy of movies”.
