Interview With Barry Keating Co-Writer Of Nymph

Barry Keatng HeadshotThere's a strong creature feature theme at FrightFest this year with plenty of beasts clambering out of the darkness to frighten the wits out of us.

One of the more original movie is Nymph which is showing today on the main screens so we decided to chat to its co-writer Barry Keating.

HC: We know you as a writer for comic books and video games so how did you make the leap to screenplay writer?

BK: Well, I’ve always wanted to write films, but went about it in a ridiculously roundabout way. I started out as a journalist, and then moved into comic books and video games. I had originally worked with my co-writer, Milan Konjevic, and the director, Milan Todorovic, on the sequel to Zone Of The Dead (Apocalypse of the Dead in the UK), and we had such a good time writing that we’ve pretty much worked together ever since, so when the guys got involved with Nymph they brought me on board and that’s how I wound up here.

HC: Nymph has got a very traditional slasher construction with added creature feature elements; did this cause any problems when writing?

BK: I think we had a pretty clear idea of what we wanted to accomplish with the script right from the start. Sure, there were a few issues here and there in terms of the creature elements that popped up during the writing process, but we were able to figure those out pretty quickly and blend everything together nicely (I hope!).

HC: Were you restricted by budget constraints when writing Nymph?

BK: There was a first draft in place already, so I had a fairly solid road map and knew what I could and couldn’t do in terms of what was in the budget. Milan, the director, and the producer, Marko Jocic, were always there to (pardon the pun) reel me back in if they felt I was going a bit too far, so that helped too!

HC: Did your script go through many drafts?

BK: Yeah, definitely. I can’t remember the exact number, but there were a good chunk of drafts followed by a series of revisions once the actors came on board and Milan and the crew started to map out everything for the shoot in Montenegro.

HC: The film brings to life a folklore classic, would you like to write another movie about a different legend and if so which one?

BK: God, there are so many to choose from, but if I had to pick one now I would say the banshee.

HC: It’s been given a few different titles across the globe, which one is your favourite?

BK: Yeah, for me it’s definitely the original title, Mamula. It’s catchy and mysterious.

HC: Nymph is your first feature and it’s showing at one of the biggest film festivals in the world, you must be nervous?

BK: I’m terrified to be honest. When I lived in London I would go to Fright Fest, and I just loved the atmosphere of the whole event and meeting people, so to have something I wrote screened at one of the biggest film festivals on the planet is definitely equal parts amazing and terrifying.

HC: So what are you working on next?

BK: I’m working on a few things, but I won’t say what for fear of jinxing them. Hopefully I’ll be able to talk more about them very, very soon.

Arrow Video FrightFest will go virtual for the second time in 2020, having taken the difficult decision to cancel its planned physical event at the Cineworld, Leicester Square. due to continuing COVID restrictions making the event socially, practically and commercially untenable. The digital edition will run over the same days, from October 22-25 October, and will combine the in-cinema and proposed Halloween digital event into one online festival experience.

Arrow Video FrightFest 2020 Digital Edition has closed its doors. Over the last few days, the team have delivered on their promise, to make the event just as good apart as it would have been together.

Day 5 of FrightFest is here (where did that time go?) but fear not as the FrightFest team have more movie mayhem for all to enjoy.

Hall contains many elements relevant to today such as a pandemic, toxicity in relationships and loss. One of the big hits of Glasgow FrightFest was Adam Stovall's A Ghost Waits. This acclaimed movie is back and has been through an edit so we chatted to Adam about this paranormal piece of work.
