FrightFest Day 1 was a celebration of not only 20 years of the event but of established and new talent.
The evening kicked off with Ant Timpson's directorial debut, Come to Daddy which stars Elijah Wood, Michael Smiley and Martin Donovan. Filled with sharp lines and brutal effects, the film was the perfect way of launching FrightFest 2019.
Director Alexandre Aja's latest piece has been co-produced with Sam Raimi so expectations were high for Crawl. Set during a huge hurricane it concerns Haley who is trapped in a crawl space trying to rescue her injured father whilst fighting off mother nature and a pack of hungry alligators. With jump-scares and some nice pieces of gore this is probably Aja's most accessible movie and superb excursion into "gator-gore".
The evening ended with another anticipated piece, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. This portmanteau is a celebration of string storytelling from a horror genre that is sorely underrepresented in this day and age. A film that needs to be seen on the big screen.
