The gripping and truly brutal Brit-shocker Cherry Tree Lane (pictured) is getting its UK television premiere on May 25th on the Horror Channel. We decided to catch up its Director, Paul Andrew Williams about this film and his future projects.
HC: Where did the idea for Cherry Tree Lane come from?
PAW: You would read things in the news about tragic events such as this. I always wondered what it would actually be like if it happened in reality. It wouldn't be like a film, there would t be any accompanying music, and tough cop looking out for you or a panic room. It would be horrible, quick and at times terrifying as times mundane. That's the story I wanted to tell.
HC: It can be viewed as social comment, highlighting class differences and inner city unrest just to name a couple of things, was this your intention?
PAW: The only intention I had was to tell the story as I think it might happen and not to make any comment on anything. I was aware that even by trying not to make a comment people would see that as a comment but what can you do? You're not going to please everyone so you hav to do what you think is right.
HC: It’s an incredibly raw, powerful and at times brutal film, what was the atmosphere like on set?
PAW: Weirdly it was incredibly light and fun for the most part. Obviously there were moments and scenes where there was concentration and a very respectful and quiet atmosphere, but when doing a film like this it's important not to send everyone home for the night like they want to kill themselves.
HC: The cast, especially the younger members give extraordinarily deep and measured performances. How did you go about casting the movie?
PAW: Just auditions and improv workshops. There was no planning on race or to a certain degree age, we just wanted the best young actors who I knew I could work with.
HC: The film, for a long period, is set in a single room, what technical problems did this create?
PAW: None, once you know what you have to work with, you work with it.
HC: It’s very different from your feature before this, The Cottage. Was this deliberate?
PAW: No. It was a film we could make for little money and in two weeks. A whole group of us wanted to do it, so we did it.
HC: The film is getting its UK TV premiere on the Horror Channel, you must be pleased about this?
PAW: When I get the cheque amigo!!!!!!
HC: So what are you working on at the moment?
PAW: A love story set in the 30s about the relationship between Robert Cape and Gerda Taro.

Jack Stewart's sublime retro horror Beyond the Gates was recently shown on Horror. Jackson is one of the strongest creatives around at the moment but he took time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about this contemporary classic and his future movie plans.
