Paranormal forces take over Horror Channel in May
By James Whittington, Thursday 15th April 2021

Otherworldly forces take over Horror Channel with Supernatural Week, eight nights of ghostly scares highlighted by the Channel premieres of Paranormal Activity, and creepy body horror, It Follows.

The special event, running from Saturday 15 May - Saturday 22 May, also sees the return of genre favourites such as demon chiller Firstborn, John Carpenter's classic car-rage chiller Christine, the twisted supernatural gasper Sinister, the star-studded supernatural cult classic Flatliners, the paranormal chiller The Quiet Ones, and Sean Byrne's devastating ride into psychological trauma, The Devil's Candy.

The week gets underway on Saturday 15th with a movie directed, photographed, produced, written, and edited by Oren Peli, Paranormal Activity. This is a found footage masterpiece which picked up the genre where The Blair Witch Project left off. Katie and Micah, a carefree couple, become haunted by an unseen presence in their house. They decide to investigate the increasingly bizarre and escalating intrusions by setting up a video camera to capture evidence of the demonic presence in their house, only to find much more than they ever imagined. The low-budget horror film, shot in a week, became a global phenomenon and ushered in a new era of low budget tech inspired 'found-footage' movies. John Carpenter drives a Stephen King classic to the big screen on Sunday the 16th, Christine. High school geek Arnie Cunningham falls in love with "Christine", a bright red 1958 Plymouth Fury which has seen much better days. Setting himself the task of restoring the car to its original condition, Arnie has become consumed with passion for the sleek, rounded, chrome-laden car. His friends are horrified but it's too late - anyone seeking to come between them becomes the victim of Christine's horrifying wrath. John Carpenter's classic car-rage chiller stars Harry Dean Stanton.

Sinister-WEB1

A petrifying paranormal piece on Monday 17th, Sinister. Desperately in need of a best seller to revive his struggling career, true crime writer Ellison (Ethan Hawke), moves his family to the scene of his most recent story; the unsolved, gruesome murder of a loving, happy suburban family. Shunned by the local community and strained by his obligations to his family, the discovery of a batch of home movies in the attic offers Ellison shocking proof to the crime he is investigating and the terrifying realisation that his investigation may be putting his family in mortal danger. Scott Derrickson's twisted supernatural gasper stars Ethan Hawke.

Flatliners-WEB1

A classic from the 90s on the 18th, an all-star cast including Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon, Flatliners. A cool chiller from Hammer on the 19th, listen out for The Quiet Ones. An unorthodox college professor leads a group of students experimenting on a troubled young woman, with terrifying results. On the 20th get ready to rock with The Devil's Candy. Unfulfilled artist Jesse Hellman (Ethan Embry) moves his wife and fellow metal music-loving teenage daughter Zooey into a rustic Texas home with a violent past. Soon, his paintings start taking on a darker, more prophetic turn as family tensions ramp up. Then the clearly unbalanced Ray appears on his doorstep wanting to move back where his parents tragically died. And when Ray sees Zooey, nothing prepares the family for the shocking chain of events. Sean Byrne's devastating ride into psychological trauma stars Ethan Embry. A very unsettling chiller on the 21st, Antonia Thomas, Luke Norris, and Thea Petrie star in Firstborn. The birth of a couple's first child goes from joyous to jittery when they discover that their newborn daughter is surrounded by a horde of evil entities.

It Follows-WEB1

A contemporary classic on the 22nd brings supernatural week to an eerie close, It Follows. For 19-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe), the fall should be about school, relationships and weekends out at the lake. But after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, or something, is following her. Faced with this burden, Jay and her teenage friends must find a way to escape the horrors that seem to be only a few steps behind. David Robert Mitchell's creepy body horror stars Maika Monroe.

Happy Times, which is showing at Grimmfest Online, is a movie that takes the home invasion genre and turns it inside out! Directed by Michael Mayer and co-written with composer Guy Ayal, the movie is a bombastic, bloody and hilarious piece of cinema. I chatted to them both about this dinner party from hell.

HC: Where did the idea for Happy Times come from?

MM: The idea for the movie started forming when I was invited to a Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year's) dinner in Los Angeles. It was the first year of Trump's presidency and wherever you went all people wanted to talk about was politics. One thing to know about the Israeli expat com...

HC: Did you know from a young age that you wanted to be a director?

DM: I started out wanting to be a makeup effects artist. After seeing Night of the Living Dead and discovering Fangoria magazine I was hooked. Tom Savini was a huge influence on my trajectory toward becoming a filmmaker. It wasn't until later that I discovered that you could boss the monsters around on set being the director. That's...

Interview with Marcel Sarmiento co-writer and director of Faceless

Faceless Director

Showing at Grimmfest Online Edition is the incredibly inventive horror/sci-fi hybrid Faceless. Here, co-writer and director Marcel Sarmiento speaks about this superb movie.

HC: Have you always been a big horror movie fan?

MS: Definitely as a kid. My first movies made with my Betamax were all about scaring one other and how gross we could push makeup effects. We mostly strangled, stabbed, and threw each other off buildings. I think as I got older, I appreciated what you could do with horror more than horror for horror's sake. I love that you can make characters do things that in any other genre you couldn't make them do and still come out the other end liking them and routi...
